npbuilds Technology Progression — The Tools They Build
Technology is not a linear march from primitive to advanced. It's a tree with branches, dead ends, and unexpected cross-pollinations. A civilization's technology tells you what problems they faced, what resources they had, and what they valued enough to invest in solving.
Tech Tree Patterns
From game design research — three structural patterns for how technologies relate:
The Vine (Civilization-style)

Character: Interlocking prerequisites. Multiple techs feed into and enable each other. Cross-branch connections create "eureka" moments where progress in one field unlocks another.
Best for: Worlds where technology is deeply interconnected. Where breakthroughs cascade. Where controlling one branch gives leverage over others.
The Linear Path (Specialization)
Bow → Longbow → Crossbow → Musket → Rifle → Automatic Rifle
Sail → Carrack → Galleon → Clipper → Steamship → Dreadnought
Character: Each tech is a direct upgrade to the previous one. Separate branches don't interact. Specialization within a domain.
Best for: Military technology, where each generation obsoletes the last. Civilizations focused on one domain. Stories about arms races.

Character: Technology and culture progress on parallel tracks. Cultural/political development is NOT a subset of technology — it's a separate progression that sometimes interacts.
Best for: Worlds where social organization matters as much as physical tools. Stories about the gap between technical capability and social wisdom.
Designing a Tech Level
The Five Domains
Every civilization's technology can be described across five domains:

A civilization doesn't need to be at the same level in all five. A culture might have advanced information technology (printing press, libraries) but primitive medicine (herbalism only). These asymmetries are where interesting worldbuilding lives.
The Fantasy System as Technology Disruptor

The key question: Does the fantasy system replace technology or supplement it?
- Replaces: Technology stagnates where magic works. Innovation happens only in domains magic doesn't cover. Medieval stasis becomes logical.
- Supplements: Technology and magic coexist. Innovation combines both. Magitech. The most complex but richest option.
- Competes: Magic and technology serve the same needs but with different trade-offs. Political factions form around each. Conflict between traditionalists and innovators.

Why Civilizations Innovate
Innovation requires all three:
- A problem — something scarce, dangerous, or inefficient
- Resources — materials, knowledge, and time to invest
- Incentive — why solving this problem matters more than other problems
If any of these is missing, innovation doesn't happen in that domain. This explains technological asymmetry: a civilization rich in water doesn't innovate in water technology.
Why Civilizations Stop Innovating
- The problem was solved — good enough is the enemy of better
- The cost exceeds the benefit — diminishing returns on further improvement
- Institutional resistance — guilds, religions, or governments that benefit from the current level
- Knowledge loss — war, plague, or political upheaval destroys the people who knew how
- The fantasy system makes it unnecessary — why build aqueducts when mages can conjure water?
Stagnation is not laziness. It's a rational response to incentive structures. If you want to explain why a civilization hasn't advanced in a domain, find the structural reason.
Common Mistakes
- Linear progress assumption. Technology doesn't always advance. Civilizations lose technology all the time. The Romans had concrete; medieval Europe didn't.
- Fantasy medieval stasis without explanation. If magic exists for 10,000 years and nobody invents a printing press, explain why. (Magic makes individual knowledge transfer more efficient? The fantasy system's cost discourages mass production?)
- Technology without social consequences. The printing press didn't just make books cheaper — it shattered the Church's monopoly on knowledge, enabled Protestantism, and restructured European politics. Every technology has social consequences.
- Anachronistic mixing. Plate armor and muskets coexisted historically, but katanas and laser rifles need an explanation. Unless the anachronism IS the worldbuilding (which can work brilliantly).
