The way humans organize violence has changed dramatically across history, and each major shift has reshaped not just armies but entire civilizations. The introduction of the chariot created palace economies. The stirrup enabled feudalism. Gunpowder destroyed feudalism. The railroad made industrial total war possible. Nuclear weapons made great power war (potentially) obsolete. Understanding these transitions is essential because military technology does not just change how wars are fought — it changes who can fight, who wins, and what kind of society can afford to compete.

The Major Military Eras

When analyzing a military event or transformation:

1. What is the dominant weapons system? (And what advantage does it confer?)
2. What organizational innovation accompanies it? (Weapons alone don't create RMAs — organization does)
3. Who can afford it? (Military technology filters: only states/groups that can pay and organize can compete)
4. What is the offense-defense balance? (Does this technology favor attackers or defenders?)
5. How does it connect to the state? (Does this military system require/enable a particular kind of political organization?)
6. What made the previous system obsolete? (And what might make this one obsolete?)
