Provenance for Wine Is Different
For paintings or watches, provenance is documentary — a chain of owners. For wine, provenance is physical — the cumulative storage conditions the bottle has experienced from production to your hand.
A 1982 Lafite that has spent 42 years in a bonded warehouse at constant 55°F, 70% RH, dark, vibration-free is a wholly different asset than the same 1982 Lafite that has spent 42 years in a garage that periodically reached 90°F. The chemical state of the wine, the integrity of the cork, the saturation of the cork by the wine — all differ. Both bottles came from the same case at Lafite in 1983; only one is worth what 1982 Lafite is worth.
The Visual Provenance Indicators
Ullage (Fill Level)
The level of wine in the bottle below the cork, measured at the shoulder. Bordeaux convention:

Auction listings include ullage notes. The discipline: look at the photograph of every bottle being considered. Many sellers will say "good" or "fine" without specifying ullage.
For Burgundy and other wines with different bottle shapes, ullage conventions differ but the principle is the same — track evaporation/seal-failure indicators visually.
Capsule Integrity
The lead/tin/aluminum/plastic capsule that covers the cork and bottle neck. Signs of concern:
- Raised capsule — heat exposure caused wine expansion to push the cork upward
- Stained capsule — wine has leaked past the cork
- Loose capsule — capsule rotates freely around the bottle neck; may indicate cork shrinkage
- Damaged or torn capsule — handling damage; not always indicative of wine condition but warrants inspection
For very old bottles, capsules from heat or humidity events may be visibly damaged while the wine itself is sometimes still drinkable; the damage is a flag for further investigation, not an automatic disqualification.
Label Condition
- Pristine label — well-stored, low humidity exposure, no water staining
- Soiled label — minor dirt; usually cosmetic; not a wine-condition concern
- Water-stained label — moisture exposure at some point; concerning
- Torn or damaged label — handling damage
- Re-affixed label — major red flag; sometimes indicates a counterfeit with original-looking label on a non-original bottle
For trophy wines, labels are part of the artifact. A Lafite with original pristine label sells for more than the same wine with stained label, even though the wine itself may be identical.
Cork (When Visible)
If the cork is visible (through the capsule, on inspection), signs:
- Saturated cork — wine has crept up the cork; sign of horizontal storage but also possible seal failure
- Cork shrinkage — cork has pulled away from the neck; serious failure
- Mold on cork — sometimes superficial (from humidity); sometimes indicative of contamination
Documentary Provenance — Source Designations
How the source of the wine is described in catalog listings matters significantly.
Ex-Château
Bottles came directly from the producing château's cellars. The premium tier. Never stored elsewhere; provenance verified by the producer's records. For 1982 Lafite or 1985 DRC, "ex-château" is the strongest provenance claim.
Ex-Cellar of [Named Collector]
Bottles from a single named private cellar with documented storage. Strong if the cellar is well-known (e.g., "ex-cellar of [Stephen Tanzer / Allen Meadows / specific named collector]"). Strong if the cellar is photographed and the collector's storage discipline is documented.
Private Collection
A single private cellar source; the collector is not named. Weaker than ex-cellar of named collector but stronger than "various sources."
European Collection / Asian Collection
Anonymous source with general geographic indication. Often a warning flag — the provenance is being deliberately obscured. Discount the price 15-25% accordingly; consider walking on high-value bottles.
"Various Sources" / No Source Specified
The bottles have been aggregated from multiple sources; storage cannot be verified. Major caution.
Bond-Stored
For UK / EU wines, "in bond" (e.g., "LCB," "Octavian," "EHD") signals continuous bonded storage with verified climate. Premium tier alongside ex-château.
The Kurniawan Era
The Rudy Kurniawan counterfeit operation (active 1990s through 2012; criminal conviction 2014, 10-year sentence; deported 2020) produced thousands of counterfeit bottles of rare Burgundy that are still circulating in the secondary market.
Patterns Kurniawan Used
- Counterfeited rare Burgundies — DRC, Domaine Ponsot, Domaine Roumier, especially old vintages (pre-1980)
- Used mid-tier California or Burgundy wine in real period bottle shapes
- Fabricated labels with deliberate aging and minor flaws to look authentic
- Built sophisticated trust networks through Acker Merrall & Condit auctions and private treaty sales
- Sold to extremely sophisticated buyers who never thought to question the implausibility of the supply
What This Means for the Market
Burgundy provenance from the 2000-2012 period requires elevated scrutiny, particularly:
- DRC bottles labeled as pre-1990 vintages
- Roumier Bonnes-Mares and Musigny
- Ponsot pre-1990 (Laurent Ponsot caught Kurniawan with a bottle that pre-dated the domain's production of that wine)
- Henri Jayer
- Any rare Burgundy with "private collection" or "various sources" provenance from this era
The Defense
- Ex-château provenance is the strongest defense for new acquisitions
- Bottle inspection — period-appropriate glass, capsule, label printing
- Cork inspection when possible — period-appropriate cork suppliers, branding
- Scientific analysis — radiocarbon dating of paper labels (catches Elmer's Glue-era fakes); spectrometry of wine
- Auction-house authentication — major houses have invested heavily in Kurniawan-era provenance verification since 2012; their cataloging is more rigorous than in the prior era
For non-trophy Burgundy (village level, recent vintages), the Kurniawan risk is low — he counterfeited the trophies. For trophy Burgundy, treat provenance as the foundation of the purchase decision.
Workflow — Pre-Purchase Provenance Assessment
For any wine acquisition above the user's significant-spend threshold:
- Confirm ullage — look at the bottle photo; ask if not provided
- Confirm capsule integrity — no raised capsule, no staining
- Confirm label condition — pristine or modest soil; no water staining or re-affixing
- Confirm source designation — ex-château preferred; named-cellar second; private collection acceptable for non-trophy; European/Asian collection a flag on trophy material
- For Burgundy especially, confirm post-Kurniawan-era authentication — auction house's specific Kurniawan-vetting process
- For very high-value bottles, demand cork/cap inspection or independent expertise
Connoisseur ─── The Bottle Tells the Story Before the Wine Does
A well-stored bottle of 1982 Lafite has a label as clean as a 5-year-old vintage; an into-neck ullage; an unstained capsule; a saturated but uncracked cork. The bottle that surfaces from a non-temperature-controlled European cellar may have a mid-shoulder ullage, slight capsule corrosion, and a label that has felt occasional humidity. Both contain "1982 Lafite." Only one is the asset that 1982 Lafite is supposed to be. Reading the bottle before reading the auction catalog is the provenance discipline.
Allocator ─── Provenance Premiums and Discounts Are 20-50 Percent of Price
A 1982 Lafite ex-château in pristine condition trades 25-50% above the same vintage from "European collection." The market formalizes provenance into pricing. A buyer who treats the price as fixed misses the discount that exists for vague provenance; a seller who skips provenance documentation forfeits the premium. Read the source designation carefully on every line; price the discount that vague provenance implies; demand the discount or walk.
