3. Analogy is a compression tool. A good analogy transfers the structure of a known domain onto an unfamiliar one. It reveals which properties are essential and which are incidental. If your analogy breaks under scrutiny, your understanding is incomplete.
4. Explanation is iteration, not performance. The first explanation will have holes. The process is: explain, discover holes, return to source material, refine, explain again. Each cycle deepens understanding.

Review the explanation from Step 2. Every flagged term, every hand-waved mechanism, every point where you thought "that's just how it works" is a gap in your understanding. For each gap:

2. Find the specific mechanism or principle that fills the gap
3. Rewrite that section of the explanation in plain language
4. Repeat until no gaps remain

Common gap signals:

• Using a technical term as a crutch ("it works because of quantum tunneling" — but can you explain quantum tunneling?)
• Skipping the causal chain ("the algorithm sorts faster because it is O(n log n)" — but why is it faster?)

Step 4: Review and Simplify

Read the entire explanation aloud. Look for:

• Unnecessary complexity: can any sentence be shortened without losing meaning?
• Redundant examples: are two examples saying the same thing?
• Accidental jargon: did any specialized terms sneak back in?
• Missing structure: would a sequence diagram, timeline, or physical metaphor help?
• Analogy quality: does every analogy hold under reasonable scrutiny?

Common Pitfalls

Explaining to the Wrong Audience

The most common mistake is to "teach a child" to an audience that is actually a peer. You unconsciously use domain vocabulary because you assume shared knowledge. The fix: pick a specific real person — a non-technical friend, a family member — and write the explanation for them by name.

Mistaking Familiarity for Understanding

Reading a chapter and nodding along is not understanding. The Feynman Technique only works when you close the book and produce the explanation from memory. If you look at the source while writing, you are transcribing, not learning.

Spending Too Long on Step 2

Finding a clever analogy feels productive. But an analogy that covers 80% of the concept can be worse than no analogy if it misleads about the remaining 20%. Always test where the analogy breaks.

Premature Satisfaction

The feeling of having produced a clear explanation is itself deceptive. The real test is whether someone else — ideally a real novice — can understand it without your help. If no novice is available, put the explanation aside for 24 hours and re-read it fresh.

The technique is hard. It is easier to re-read the textbook than to produce a gap-free explanation from scratch. The temptation to shortcut — to search for someone else's simplified explanation instead of generating your own — must be resisted. The value is in the generation, not the consumption.
