AWS CDK Python setup

Set up a Python AWS CDK project from prerequisites through first deployment, preserving the expected CDK project layout and validating the local environment before touching AWS resources.

Prerequisites and context

Setup workflow

Install and verify the CDK CLI:

npm install -g aws-cdk
cdk --version
```
Configure AWS credentials if aws sts get-caller-identity fails:
```
brew install awscli
aws configure
```
Enter the AWS Access Key, Secret Access Key, default region, and output format when prompted. Prefer existing organization credential flows when the project already uses SSO or environment-based credentials.

Create the project:

mkdir my-cdk-project
cd my-cdk-project
cdk init app --language python

Activate the generated virtual environment:

# macOS/Linux
source .venv/bin/activate

# Windows
.venv\Scripts\activate

Install Python dependencies:

pip install -r requirements.txt

Synthesize before deploying:
```
cdk synth
```
Bootstrap once per account/region before first deployment:
```
cdk bootstrap
```
Preview and deploy:
```
cdk diff
cdk deploy

Project anatomy

Path	Purpose
`app.py`	Main CDK application entry point; instantiates stacks.
`my_cdk_project/`	Python package containing stack definitions and constructs.
`requirements.txt`	Python dependencies; keep it pinned for consistent builds.
`cdk.json`	CDK app command and context configuration.
`cdk.out/`	Generated CloudFormation templates from `cdk synth`; do not hand-edit.

Primary dependencies are aws-cdk-lib for core CDK constructs and constructs for the base construct library.

Troubleshooting
