Academic Entrepreneur Role Choice
Purpose
Choose your own role in a spin-out (full-time founder, scientific advisor, part-time) and manage balancing an academic career with entrepreneurship.
Based on
the owner's published commercialisation guide (owner, 2025). Chapter "The Academic Entrepreneur's Path" (pp. 59-63).
- UK review (Independent Review of University Spin-out Companies): more than half of spin-out founders who left academia did not intend to return, 12% wanted to return, 31% were uncertain
- Typical consulting time allocation for academics: c. 20%/year (roughly one day a week or 30 days/year)
Method
- Identify three main models: (a) full-time founder/executive (leave of absence or resignation), (b) scientific advisor/shareholder while remaining in academia, (c) part-time hybrid in the early stage.
- Assess the career risk openly: a full-time move can slow publication pace and make it harder to return to academia — ask about your organisation's leave-of-absence and tenure-clock policies.
- If staying on as an advisor: find out the permitted consulting time (often c. 20%/year) and keep track of it — entrepreneurship often exceeds this in practice, which can lead to burnout.
- Discuss with your department and TTO early: leave-of-absence options, continuity of thesis supervision, conflict-of-interest rules.
- Formalise use of the university's/organisation's resources (lab space, student work) through agreements — avoid ambiguity about IP and working time.
- Consider a consultant/freelancer route if the "product" is your expertise rather than a single piece of IP — this doesn't always require setting up a company.
- Keep publication and IP protection coordinated: time the patent filing before publication, manage conflicts of interest transparently (e.g. an objective third party runs the clinical trial for your own invention).
Gotchas
- The c. 20%/year consulting-time figure is a policy ceiling, not a time budget for entrepreneurship — the Method explicitly warns that entrepreneurship "often exceeds this in practice," so planning around the 20% number as if it were sufficient sets up burnout, not a red flag to avoid it.
- Picking the advisor/shareholder model (b) without formalising lab space, student work, and IP use through agreements (step 5) leaves the exact ambiguity this skill is meant to prevent — the risk isn't in which model you choose, it's in skipping step 5 after choosing it.
- Patent-before-publication timing (step 7) can be violated unintentionally: a conference abstract, poster, or casual talk can count as public disclosure and kill patentability before the TTO conversation even starts.
- The consultant/freelancer route (step 6) is easy to overlook if you default to "spin-out means forming a company" — check first whether the commercial value is really a piece of IP or just your expertise.
- This skill doesn't make the personal career call or give a binding employment-law reading — stopping at "here are the three models" without routing tenure-clock and leave-of-absence questions to the department/TTO or a specialist leaves the real risk (career return) unaddressed.
