What Wealth Actually Is

Wealth is assets that earn while you sleep. It is not money (money is just a transfer mechanism) and it is not status (status is a zero-sum game). Wealth is the factory that generates money. A house that rents. Code that runs. Content that gets viewed. A business that operates without you.

The fundamental distinction Naval draws:

• Wealth = buying your freedom (positive sum game — creates value for everyone)
• Money = social credits (neutral — just moves around)

How to identify your specific knowledge:

• Follow genuine curiosity — not career paths

The Four Types of Leverage

Naval's hierarchy for 2020s builders: Code + Media > Capital > Labor

Applied: Most founders today have media leverage (audience) plus code leverage (internal tools, AI systems) available to them. The goal is to combine these so output scales without proportional input of time.

Permissionless Leverage

Labor and capital require permission. You need someone to hire you, invest in you, or hand you resources.

Code and media are permissionless. You can ship software and publish content without anyone saying yes.

What good judgment looks like:

How to build judgment:

1. Read foundational texts — not news. News is noise. History, philosophy, science, and mathematics are signal.

The "top 1% of the world" insight: You don't need to be the best in the world at any single skill. You need to combine two or three things where the combination is unique. "A surgeon who is also a good writer" is rare. "An AI engineer who can also sell and create content" is extremely rare.

Combining two or three domains the market doesn't naturally combine is the simplest natural moat.

On Hiring and Teams

Naval's preference: Work with people, not for people and not managing people.

The optimal structure for most early-stage builders is a small group of exceptional people who each have ownership stakes. A few A-players with equity outperforms a large team of B-players with salaries.

The co-founder principle: "With a co-founder, the most important thing is alignment on values, not skills." Different skills + different values = eventual blow-up. Similar values + different skills = compounding.
