How to Help

1. Map the landscape - Identify critical path relationships and unique knowledge areas to anchor your brand.
2. Develop a content engine - Create a sustainable routine for sharing original insights and reactive micro-blogging.
3. Cultivate strategic connections - Build long-term relationships through an abundance mindset and value-first interactions.
4. Audit and optimize - Refine your digital footprint and outreach strategy based on audience feedback and organizational goals.

Core Principles

Top-of-Funnel Discovery Engine

Gergely: "In the first about nine months of the newsletter, it got to 50,000 subscribers, and then the next five months, or six or seven months, it went up by another a hundred and something thousand subscribers. This was when Substack introduced recommendations, which has been a massive growth engine, and I guess being one of the top publications, I benefited from it."

Use a high-quality free version of your content as a massive top-of-funnel engine for audience discovery. This creates a step-function growth pattern by leveraging platform recommendations and lower barriers to entry.

Mind-Follower Loyalty

Julian Shapiro: "When people follow you for your mind, when they're mind followers, not labor followers, higher affinity means more loyalty, means they pay closer attention to what you're saying. And if you actually try to get them to do something with you, you have an event offline, there's something you're selling, there's a cause you care about, they're way more likely to indulge."

Building an audience around your unique thinking creates significantly more loyalty than acting as a content curator. Sharing original insights attracts high-affinity followers who value your perspective.

Grassroots Vulnerability

Janna Bastow: "Honestly, it wasn't so much that we set out to build a community, it was that we got together with some product people with the idea that we didn't know what we were doing. And so we figured if we got together with some other product people and started chatting it through, we'd all learn together."

The strongest professional communities are built on shared vulnerability and a commitment to learning together. Prioritize consistency and empower members to curate content rather than enforcing top-down authority.

Questions to Help Users

• "What is the unique worldview or mission that differentiates your brand from others in your field?"
• "Who are the five key individuals who control the critical paths to your next career objective?"
• "What specific, transferable skills are most visible on your current digital profile?"
• "How can you transform a project you are already working on into a public-facing initiative?"
• "What questions do you find yourself answering repeatedly for peers or colleagues?"
• "How much of your networking is currently transactional versus long-term relationship building?"

Common Mistakes to Flag

• The Scarcity Trap - Acting with desperate or transactional energy around powerful people often scares them off and ruins potential long-term value.
• Passive Consumption - Learning in private without public implementation keeps your expertise invisible to recruiters and potential collaborators.
• Brand Favor-Seeking - Asking people to share content as a favor to a brand fails because people only share content that elevates their own social standing.
• Wait-and-See Networking - Failing to network until you urgently need a job makes your outreach feel rushed and transactional rather than authentic.
• Acting as a Curator Only - Focusing solely on sharing other people's ideas prevents you from building a high-affinity audience that follows your specific way of thinking.
