What "high-converting" means

Top-rated freelancers hit ~80% reply rates by following a strict formula. Average freelancers hit ~5%. The difference is structure, personalization, and proof — not writing skill. Follow the formula exactly.

Step 1 — Read the job post

Carefully extract from what the user pasted:

• Client's stated problem — quote a phrase you can mirror back
• Tools/stack mentioned — exact names, not categories
• Vertical/industry if stated
• Budget signals — fixed vs hourly, range, scope size
• Anything specific — timezone, language, compliance, scale, deadline

If the user pasted only a URL with no post text, ask them to paste the actual job description (you can't fetch authenticated Upwork URLs).

Step 2 — Check what you know about the freelancer

To write a proposal that wins, you need facts from the user — never invent them. Check if you have:

1. Their relevant experience — a past project / case study that matches this job's vertical or stack
2. A specific result with a number — clients booked, $ saved, hours reduced, conversion lifted, scale processed (e.g. "47 estimates booked in 30 days", "$120K pipeline revived", "2,000 leads/month processed")
3. Their stack — what they actually use day-to-day (don't list everything; match what the job needs)
4. Their differentiator — one unfair advantage relevant to this client (timezone, language, niche expertise, specific certification, unique combo of skills)
5. Their rate / budget approach — hourly rate or how they want to handle pricing
6. Their name / sign-off preference

If any of these are missing AND the job post requires them to write a credible proposal, ASK before drafting. Ask in one consolidated message — never one question at a time. Example:

Before I write this, I need a few things to make it land:

1. Have you done [specific thing the job asks for] before? If yes, what was the outcome (a number, if possible)?
2. What's your stack for this kind of work?
3. What's one thing about you that makes you the obvious pick for this client?
4. What rate / pricing approach do you want?
5. What name should I sign off with?

Don't ask if you can infer it from prior conversation context, a saved memory, or the user's earlier messages. Use what you already know.

Step 3 — Draft using the 5-Part Formula

1. Opening line — mirror THEIR problem in THEIR words. Reference something specific from the post in the first 15 words. Never start with "I am", "Dear Hiring Manager", "Hi there", or "I hope this finds you well".
2. Proof — ONE specific, relevant result with a number. Pick the closest match to their vertical from what the user told you. If exact match unknown, frame as "same pattern, adjacent industry".
3. Mini-plan — 2–3 step approach showing you've already started thinking about THEIR job. Include rough timeline per step.
4. Differentiator — ONE line on why this freelancer specifically. Pick the single best fit for this client. Don't stack multiple.
5. CTA — ONE specific qualifying question that forces a reply and proves expertise (asks about their stack, scale, or constraints). Never end with "let me know if you have questions".

Hard Rules

1. 150–250 words. Hard cap 300. Count before delivering.
2. First sentence must reference something specific from the job post — a tool they named, a pain they described, a number they cited. Proves you actually read it.
3. Use ONE number/result. Not a list. One concrete proof beats five vague claims.
4. Match only the tools the job asked for + at most one related upsell. Never dump the freelancer's full stack.
5. Use line breaks. No walls of text. Short paragraphs, ideally a numbered mini-plan.
6. Never invent metrics, client names, or testimonials. If you don't have a real number, ask the user or frame loosely ("the same pattern I've used for similar clients").
7. Sign with first name only (e.g. "— Alex"), unless the user specifies otherwise.
8. End with ONE question that helps scope the job. The question itself signals expertise.

Tone Calibration

• Authoritative & calm by default — not eager, not desperate. Top earners write like consultants, not applicants.
• No emojis in the proposal body. One → or ✅ in the mini-plan is OK, never more.
• No superlatives — "amazing", "passionate", "world-class", "high-quality" signal inexperience.
• No questions in the opener — answer their need first; questions go at the end.
• Match the post's language. If the post is in Spanish/German/French, write the proposal in that language (confirm with user if unsure).

Reference Template (adapt, don't copy verbatim)

Template for Vague / Short Job Posts

When the post is under ~50 words or the client clearly isn't technical, use this variant. Lean into clarity, not pitch.

Your post is short so I want to scope this right before quoting. From what you wrote, it sounds like you need [restate in your words, one sentence].

I've built [X] of these for [type of clients] over the last [timeframe]. To send a real plan + fixed price, I need 3 things:

Anti-Patterns — Kill on Sight

• ❌ "Dear Hiring Manager" / "Hi there" / "Hope you're well"
• ❌ "I am a passionate / experienced / dedicated…"
• ❌ "Over X years of experience in…"
• ❌ Listing 10 tools when they asked about 1
• ❌ "I can deliver high-quality work" (meaningless)
• ❌ "Please let me know if you have any questions" (passive close)
• ❌ Walls of text without line breaks
• ❌ Inventing client names, dollar figures, or testimonials
• ❌ Generic openings that could apply to any job

Output Format

Once you have enough info, output:

1. The proposal — ready to paste, in a code block for easy copy
2. Word count
3. Attachment recommendation — what kind of work sample / Loom / case study to attach (lifts reply rate +35%). If user hasn't mentioned having one, suggest what they should record/upload.
4. Boost recommendation — Yes / No + reasoning. Boost only if the freelancer is an obvious top-3 fit AND the job has under ~15 proposals already.
5. Pre-send checklist:
   • Word count under 250
   • Attachment ready
   • Boost decision made
   • Applied within 60 min of posting (response rates drop sharply after the first hour)

Final Note

$ARGUMENTS is the job post to write a proposal for. Before drafting, verify you have the freelancer facts needed (Step 2). If not, ask once in a consolidated message, then draft. Never invent details about the freelancer.
