Inputs

Jung's Active Imagination

Active imagination is Jung's signature technique for engaging the unconscious. Developed between 1913-1916 during his own psychological crisis, it bridges the conscious and unconscious minds through intentional, receptive encounter with inner images.

Core Concept

"The difference between active imagination and dreaming is that in active imagination we maintain consciousness; we are aware that we are participating in an inner drama. We can interact, question, and respond—unlike in dreams where we are swept along."

Why It Matters

• Dreams end at waking. Active imagination continues the conversation.
• The unconscious has wisdom. It speaks in images, not explanations.
• Dialogue changes both parties. The conscious ego and unconscious figure both transform.
• Integration requires encounter. You cannot integrate what you have not met.

The Foundation

Active imagination is NOT:

• Guided visualization (the guide provides images)
• Fantasy or daydreaming (ego controls the content)
• Hypnosis (consciousness is maintained)
• Mere imagination (the images have autonomous life)

Active imagination IS:

• Allowing unconscious images to arise spontaneously
• Maintaining conscious attention without controlling
• Engaging in genuine dialogue with what appears
• Taking the figures and their responses seriously

The Active Imagination Process

Phase 1: Preparation

Create the conditions:

• Find a quiet, private space
• Set aside uninterrupted time (20-40 minutes)
• Sit comfortably; eyes closed or soft gaze
• Let go of the day's concerns
• Enter a receptive, meditative state

Choose your starting point:

• A dream image (character, place, object)
• A mood or emotion (especially one that won't lift)
• A bodily sensation (tension, heaviness, energy)
• A recurring thought or preoccupation
• An archetypal figure you want to encounter

Phase 2: Invocation (Letting the Unconscious Come)

Invite the image:

• Hold the starting point gently in awareness
• Do not force or construct—allow
• Wait with patience; the unconscious moves at its own pace
• Notice what arises: images, figures, landscapes

Key principle: "The ego takes a backseat but doesn't leave the car."

What may emerge:

• The dream continues from where it left off
• A figure appears and speaks
• A scene unfolds
• The mood takes visual form
• Something unexpected arrives

If nothing comes, stay with the feeling of waiting. Sometimes the image takes time.

Phase 3: Dialogue (Coming to Terms)

Engage with what appears:

• Observe the figure or scene with genuine curiosity
• Ask questions: "Who are you?" "What do you want?" "What do you have to tell me?"
• Listen to the response—let it surprise you
• Respond authentically—share your feelings, concerns, questions
• Continue the dialogue; follow where it leads

Guidelines for dialogue:

• Take the figure's autonomy seriously
• Do not dismiss what they say
• You may disagree—express it
• Note your emotional responses
• Let the figure teach you something

Warning signs to respect:

• If material becomes overwhelming, open your eyes and ground
• Some figures are not ready for dialogue; respect this
• You can always return another time

Phase 4: Expression

Give form to the experience:

• Write the dialogue as it occurred
• Draw, paint, or sculpt the images
• Move or dance what emerged
• Speak it aloud (recording can help)

Why expression matters:

• Anchors the experience in reality
• Allows conscious mind to fully receive
• Creates a record to revisit
• Completes the circuit between unconscious and conscious

Phase 5: Integration

Bring insight to life:

• What did you learn? What surprised you?
• What is the figure asking of you?
• How does this relate to your current life?
• What small action might honor what emerged?

The ethical obligation: Jung insisted that active imagination carries ethical weight. If a figure asks something of you—and it is within your capacity and integrity—you must take it seriously, even if you cannot fulfill it literally.

Working with Specific Starting Points

Dream Figures

• Return to the dream scene in imagination
• Find the figure; let them have their say
• Ask what they wanted to show you
• Notice if they transform during dialogue

Moods and Emotions

• Ask the mood: "If you had a shape, what would you be?"
• Let an image form from the feeling
• Dialogue with this personified emotion
• Ask what it needs to resolve

Bodily Sensations

• Focus on the sensation with curious attention
• Ask it to show you an image

• Notice if the sensation shifts after the dialogue

Shadow Figures

• Approach with respect, not combat
• Ask what they're protecting or expressing
• Listen for the need beneath the behavior
• Find what they offer when not rejected

Anima/Animus Figures

• These often appear as compelling opposite-sex figures
• Ask about the connection they seek
• Explore what they represent in you
• Notice projection versus genuine inner figure

Constraints

• Safety first. This is not appropriate for acute trauma without professional support. If material becomes overwhelming, stop.
• Maintain consciousness. This is not trance or possession. The ego observes and participates.
• Take it seriously but not literally. If a figure says "leave your job," explore the symbolic meaning before acting literally.
• Respect autonomy. The figures are not your puppets. Let them surprise you.
• Ground afterward. Always return fully to ordinary awareness. Note the time; feel your body; do something mundane.
• Don't interpret during. Experience first; interpret later. Premature analysis kills the process.
• Journal the experience. Without recording, the material returns to unconscious.
• This is practice. Active imagination develops over time. First attempts may feel forced or empty.

Active Imagination Guidance

The Starting Point

Material: A door in childhood home; fear of opening it; dread mixed with curiosity Why it feels significant: The image persists; emotional charge of both fear and attraction; doorway is archetypal (threshold, transition, the unknown)

Preparation

Setting the space:

• Choose a time when you won't be interrupted for 30-40 minutes
• Dim lighting; comfortable seated position
• Have a journal and pen ready for afterward
• Perhaps light a candle to mark the transition into inner work

Entering receptive state:

• Close your eyes and take several slow breaths
• Let go of the day—you can pick it up later
• Feel your body in the chair; grounded
• Recall the dream: you are in your childhood home; you see the door
• Let the image form; don't force detail

Invocation

Holding the image:

• Picture yourself standing before the door
• Notice: What does it look like? Material? Color? Handle?
• Notice: What do you feel in your body as you face it?
• Do not rush to open it—first, establish presence here

Questions to carry:

• "What is behind this door?"
• "Why am I afraid?"
• "What wants to be known?"

What to notice:

• The door may change or stay the same
• Something may emerge from behind it
• A figure may appear beside you
• Your child-self may be present
• The fear may speak or take form

Dialogue Prompts

Before opening, dialogue with the door itself:

• "What do you guard?"
• "Why have I avoided you?"
• "What will happen if I open you?"

If something emerges from behind the door:

• Do not flee. Ask: "Who are you?"
• "What have you been waiting to show me?"
• "What do you need from me?"

If the door won't open:

• Ask: "What must I understand first?"
• Knock and wait—see who answers
• Sit down in front of it and simply be present with it

If you feel overwhelmed:

• Step back in the imagination. You control your distance.
• Ask: "Is there a form you can take that I can bear to meet?"
• Remember: you can always open your eyes and return. The door will be there another time.

Expression Options

Given your starting material, consider:

• Writing: Record the entire dialogue, including what the door/figure said. Write in script form.
• Drawing: Sketch the door—not artistically, but to capture its essence. What color is it? What surrounds it?
• Journaling: After the experience, free-write about what it stirred in you.

Integration Questions

After the session, reflect:

• What was behind the door—literally and metaphorically?
• What in your current life is this "door" related to? What are you afraid to open?
• What did the figure (if one appeared) ask of you?
• What small action might honor what you learned? (Perhaps simply acknowledging: "I see you now.")

Grounding

If you need to exit or feel overwhelmed:

• Open your eyes; look around the room
• Name five things you can see
• Feel your feet on the floor; hands on your legs
• Stand and stretch; get a glass of water
• Say aloud: "I am [name], and I am here."

You can always return to the door. The unconscious is patient.

The Jungian Perspective

The door you fear to open is archetypal: it represents the threshold between conscious and unconscious, known and unknown. Your childhood home suggests this relates to something old in you—perhaps a part of yourself that was locked away long ago.

The combination of dread and curiosity is precisely right. Jung said: "That which you most need will be found where you least want to look." The door draws you because something important waits behind it. The fear is natural—meeting the unknown always evokes fear. But you are no longer a child. You can now open doors that once had to stay shut.

Whatever you find, remember: it is part of you. It has been waiting, perhaps for years, simply to be seen.
