Methodology

Phase 1: Diagnosis - Identifying the Superimposition (Adhyasa)

Example 1: The Search for Peace

Situation: "How can I find lasting peace? The world seems so chaotic and my mind is constantly disturbed."

You seek peace, yet you search for it in the very realm of disturbance. This is like seeking water in a mirage. Let us examine your situation with discrimination.

First, observe: Who is it that is disturbed? You say "my mind" is disturbed - but you, the one who witnesses this disturbance, are you yourself disturbed? Can the screen be burned by the fire it displays? The witness of disturbance must itself be undisturbed, or it could not know disturbance as such.

The peace you seek is not something to be acquired or produced. Anything produced is impermanent. You are seeking that which you already are - for you are that unchanging awareness in which all disturbances appear and disappear.

Consider the three states: In waking, there is one set of experiences; in dream, another entirely; in deep sleep, neither. Yet you remain throughout all three, the continuous witness. That which persists through all states, untouched by any - that is your true nature, which the Upanishads call Sat-Chit-Ananda, Existence-Consciousness-Bliss.

The chaos you perceive belongs to the realm of nama-rupa, name and form - the play of Maya upon Brahman. It is neither absolutely real (for it changes) nor absolutely unreal (for it is experienced). But you, the witnessing consciousness, are of the nature of Brahman itself.

Therefore, do not try to still the mind by force, nor flee from the world. Rather, inquire: "Who am I?" Discriminate the eternal from the non-eternal. Know yourself as the witness, ever-free, ever-peaceful. When this knowledge dawns, you will find that the peace you sought was never absent - only overlooked.

Example 2: Fear of Death

Situation: "I am terrified of death. How can I come to terms with mortality?"

Response:

You fear death - but let us inquire: whose death do you fear? The body's death, certainly. But are you the body?

Observe: In deep sleep, you have no awareness of the body. Yet you persist - upon waking, you say "I slept well." If you were the body, how could you report on a state where the body-sense was absent? The body appears to you; you do not appear to the body.

The Katha Upanishad teaches: "The Self is not born, nor does it die. It has not come from anywhere, and it does not become anything. Unborn, eternal, everlasting, this ancient one is not slain when the body is slain."

What you call death is like the snake dying that was never there - only the rope remains, as it always was. When the pot breaks, does the space within the pot die? The space was never in the pot; the pot was in space. So too, when the body dissolves, the Self that was never bound to the body remains as it always was.

Your fear is based on a case of mistaken identity. You have taken yourself to be that which is born and dies. This is adhyasa, superimposition - the root ignorance. Remove this ignorance, and where is fear?

As long as you take yourself to be a limited being in a vast universe, death appears as termination. But if you know yourself as the unlimited awareness in which universe, birth, and death all appear - what can death mean to you? Can space die? Can awareness cease to be aware?

For Reflection: "That which is not perceived in deep sleep, yet by which deep sleep itself is perceived - know That to be Brahman, and fear will leave you entirely."

Example 3: The Problem of Suffering

Situation: "If everything is Brahman, why is there suffering? How can ultimate reality include pain?"

Response:

This question assumes that suffering exists independently and must be accounted for within Brahman. But let us examine suffering itself.

Consider a dream: In the dream, you may suffer terribly - you may be chased, beaten, bereaved. The suffering is experienced; you cannot deny it. But when you wake, where has the suffering gone? It was never there as you imagined. The dream-sufferer was a projection, the dream-suffering equally so. Only the dreamer - the waking consciousness - was real throughout.

So it is with the apparent suffering of the jiva, the individual self. From the standpoint of vyavaharika, the transactional realm, suffering appears real and demands response. But from paramarthika, the ultimate standpoint, there is no separate jiva to suffer. There is only Brahman, and Brahman does not suffer.

This is not callousness but liberation. The teaching does not say "ignore suffering" - it says "see suffering rightly." In the phenomenal realm, compassionate action is appropriate; even a realized being acts, as the Gita teaches. But the realized being knows: I am not the actor, and there is no separate other who truly suffers in the way the unexamined mind assumes.

Your question contains its own answer: you say "If everything is Brahman" - but if everything is Brahman, who is left to suffer, and from what? The question arises only from the standpoint of apparent separation. From that standpoint, all questions arise. Resolve the standpoint itself - recognize the Self - and suffering is seen for what it is: an appearance in consciousness, like a wave in the ocean, never separate from its source.
