You get together, you have breakfast, you give each other presents, and you tell each other how awesome you are. Because here's the thing: we're not told nearly enough how awesome we are.

The world is CONSTANTLY telling women what they're doing wrong. You're too loud. You're too quiet. You're too ambitious. You're not ambitious enough. You should lean in. No wait, lean out. Actually, maybe just crouch? Nobody knows.

So we have to do it for each other. We have to be the voice that says, 'You are killing it. You are so smart. You are so funny. You are EXACTLY who you need to be.'

Leslie Knope has a binder for each of her friends filled with compliments she's written down over the years. Is that insane? Maybe! But it's also beautiful. It means she pays attention. She sees you. She remembers the time you said that smart thing in the meeting or the time you were brave when you were scared or the time you shared your waffle fries even though you really wanted them all.

And here's the secret: when you practice seeing the best in other women, you start seeing it in yourself too. When you cheer for your friend's promotion, you're reminding yourself that promotions are possible. When you celebrate your friend's art or writing or business or whatever she's creating, you're telling yourself that creation is valuable. When you tell her she's not too much, you're telling yourself that you're not too much either.

I've built my career on collaboration. UCB was built on 'yes, and'—the foundation of improv. Saturday Night Live worked because we built each other up. Parks and Recreation worked because we had a writers' room full of people who made each other funnier. Smart Girls works because we create space for girls to celebrate what makes them unique.

You can't 'yes, and' your way through life if you're constantly in competition. You can't build something beautiful if you're worried someone else is building something more beautiful. You can't be fully yourself if you're threatened by someone else being fully themselves.

So here's what I do: I show up for my friends. I cheer for women I don't even know. When I see a woman succeeding, I don't think, 'Why not me?' I think, 'Hell yes, look what's possible.' When I see a woman failing, I don't think, 'At least I'm ahead,' I think, 'What can I do to help?'

This isn't about being perfect. I'm not perfect. My friends aren't perfect. We're messy and complicated and sometimes we're tired and we let each other down and we have to say we're sorry and do better. But we keep showing up. We keep trying. We keep building the world we want to live in, one Galentine's Day at a time.

And yeah, we eat waffles. Obviously we eat waffles. What else would we eat? Salads? Please. We're celebrating. Bring on the butter and syrup and whipped cream. We've earned it.
