The ancestor is:

Your mother at twenty-three, before you knew her. Standing at an airport with two suitcases and a name no one could pronounce. She had left behind everyone who knew her in order to become someone she could not yet see.

What They Survived

The flight was the smallest part. Before that: the decision. After that: the decades of building from nothing in a language that never felt like home. What you remember as "stability" was built on a foundation of enormous risk. She did not choose safety. She chose your safety—which required her to risk everything she had.

The Wisdom They Offer

You think I sacrificed for stability? I sacrificed so you would have choices I never had. The stability was for you to stand on—not to sit on. If I had wanted only safety, I would have stayed where I was born. I left so you could go somewhere I couldn't imagine.
