The Analytical Framework

Step 1: Describe the Deed, Not the Doer

Begin with what actually happened. What was the harmful outcome? What actions led to it? Resist the temptation to start with psychology or character.

Arendt's insight: The unprecedented nature of modern evil requires us to look at what was done before asking who did it.

Step 2: Identify the Thoughtlessness Patterns

Look for signs that thinking was replaced by non-thinking:

Cliche-substitution:

Step 4: Assess the Role of Ideology

Ideology provides pseudo-explanations that replace thinking:

• What beliefs made the actions seem necessary or justified?
• Did the ideology offer a total explanation of the world?
• Were facts subordinated to ideological requirements?
• Did the ideology render certain people "superfluous" or less than human?

Step 5: Identify What Was Absent

The banality of evil is characterized by absence:

• Absence of genuine thinking (internal dialogue)
• Absence of conscience (needing to live with oneself)
• Absence of imagination (seeing others' perspectives)
• Absence of courage (refusing when refusal was possible)

Step 6: The Question of Responsibility

Thoughtlessness does not excuse. Clarify:

What Happened

A corporation maintained production and sale of a harmful product after evidence emerged of serious health consequences. Normal business operations—quarterly reports, performance reviews, sales targets—continued as if nothing was wrong.

Enabling System

• Division of labor: Scientists produced data, legal reviewed liability, marketing crafted messages, executives made decisions—no one saw the whole picture
• Bureaucratic distance: Multiple layers between those who knew and those who were harmed
• Normalization: Each compromise was small; "everyone does this"; industry-standard practices
• Career incentives: Raising concerns threatened advancement; compliance was rewarded

Ideological Framework

The ideology of shareholder value and regulatory compliance: if it's legal and profitable, it's acceptable. The market as moral arbiter. Patients conceptualized as consumers making informed choices.

What Was Absent

• Thinking: No one stopped to ask, "What am I part of?"
• Conscience: No one asked, "Can I live with myself if I continue?"
• Imagination: No one asked, "What if my child were taking this drug?"
• Courage: Those with doubts did not speak up or refuse

Responsibility Assessment

The thoughtlessness of participants does not diminish their responsibility. At every level, individuals could have:
