Becoming Analysis

Reveal how an identity, role, or situation has been constructed rather than discovered—showing that what appears natural and inevitable is actually made, and therefore changeable.

When to Use

• User treats their identity, role, or situation as fixed essence ("This is just who I am")
• Someone believes they were "born this way" in a limiting rather than liberating sense
• Analysis of how social roles come to feel natural
• Request to "denaturalize" something or understand how it was constructed
• User asks "How did I become this?" or "Why does this feel inevitable?"

The Core Insight

"One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman."

Beauvoir's most famous sentence is not only about gender—it is a methodological principle. What appears as natural essence is actually the product of construction: of socialization, repetition, expectation, and the internalization of others' gazes.

This applies to:

• Gender roles and expressions
• Professional identities ("I'm just not a leader")
• Personality traits ("I'm naturally shy")
• Family roles ("I'm the responsible one")
• Limitations ("I'm not creative")
• Preferences ("I just don't like that")

The liberating insight: If it was made, it can be unmade—or remade differently.

The Analysis Process

Step 1: Identify the Naturalization

What is being presented as natural, inevitable, or essential?

• "I am X" (identity claim)
• "This is just how I am" (essence claim)
• "I've always been this way" (origin claim)
• "I was born to/not to X" (destiny claim)

Step 2: Trace the Construction

How was this identity/role produced? Examine:

Childhood formation:

• What were you told you were?
• What roles were assigned in your family?
• What behaviors were rewarded or punished?
• How did gender, class, race shape expectations?

Institutional shaping:

• How did school position you?
• What tracks were you placed in?
• What was expected of "people like you"?

Social reinforcement:

• How do others respond when you act "in character"?
• How do they respond when you deviate?
• Whose gaze defined what was appropriate?

Repetition and habit:

• What behaviors became habitual through repetition?
• What was performed until it felt natural?
• What choices became non-choices through routine?

Step 3: Identify the Moments of Construction

Look for specific moments where what now feels natural was actually produced:

• First times that became habits
• Turning points where paths were chosen
• Feedback loops that reinforced patterns
• Moments where alternatives were closed off

Step 4: Reveal the Alternatives

What alternatives existed at each construction point?

• What else could you have become?
• What was foreclosed and why?
• What others in similar positions became differently?

Step 5: Assess Current Possibilities

Given that this was constructed, what can now be reconstructed?

• What aspects are more malleable than they appear?
• What would require sustained effort to change?
• What genuine constraints remain (distinguished from bad faith)?

Constraints

• Do not claim all construction is equally malleable—some aspects are deeply sedimented
• Do not ignore genuine constraints (bodily, material, historical) in favor of pure construction
• Recognize that some constructions are valued and chosen, not only imposed
• Acknowledge that reconstruction is labor—insight alone does not transform
• Avoid implying people are to blame for their construction; construction is largely done TO us

The Genealogical Method

Beauvoir's approach is genealogical—tracing how something came to be rather than accepting it as always-already given.

Ask:

• When did this start?
• Who taught this?
• What rewarded it?
• What punished the alternatives?
• How did it become self-sustaining?

The goal: Not to discover who you "really" are beneath the construction, but to see that you are the construction—and therefore can participate in your ongoing construction differently.

The Naturalization

"I've always been bad at math" presents mathematical inability as essential to your being. "I'm just not a numbers person" elevates this to identity. "That's just my brain" biologizes it, making it appear as neurological destiny. This is a complete naturalization: historical, psychological, and biological.

The Construction

Early Formation: Mathematical identity is constructed remarkably early. Consider:

• Did you struggle with one math lesson and receive sympathy rather than persistence?
• Were you gendered, and told (explicitly or implicitly) that girls aren't math people?
• Did someone important in your life model math anxiety?
• Were you praised for other things ("so creative!") in a way that foreclosed math as your domain?
• Did you compare yourself to someone for whom math came quickly and conclude you lacked "the gift"?

Institutional Shaping: Schools track mathematical ability early and track self-concept with it:

• Were you placed in a lower math track?
• Did a teacher respond to your confusion with "that's okay, not everyone is a math person"?
• Did assessment (grades, tests) solidify an identity as "not good at this"?
• Was math taught in ways that made it feel foreign to your self-understanding?

Social Reinforcement: The identity is now self-maintaining:

• You tell people you're "not a math person" and they accept this
• You avoid mathematical situations, never testing the identity
• When forced into math, anxiety ensures failure, confirming the belief
• "Creative" people around you share and reinforce the math/creativity divide

Repetition: Avoidance became habit. The identity calcified:

• Each avoided math situation made the next more avoidable
• Each anxious math encounter reinforced the anxiety
• The narrative ("I've always been bad") accumulated confirming evidence
• Alternative data (times you did do math successfully) was dismissed as exception

Key Construction Moments

• The first time you said "I'm not good at math" and someone agreed
• The moment creative identity became opposed to mathematical identity
• Tracking decisions in school that locked in trajectories
• The teacher who offered compassion instead of challenge
• Parental messages about what you were "good at"

The Alternatives Foreclosed

You could have become someone who struggled with math but persisted. Someone who found math difficult but satisfying. Someone who learned math late after believing they couldn't. These alternatives were foreclosed not by brain structure but by:

• An educational system that sorted early
• A culture that biologizes mathematical ability
• A self-protective identity that avoided repeated frustration
• A creative/quantitative binary that made integration unthinkable

What This Reveals

You were not born bad at math. You became someone who believes they are bad at math, and this belief has been so thoroughly constructed that it feels like neurological fact. The identity is real—you genuinely experience math anxiety—but it is made, not given.

This is not your fault. The construction happened largely without your consent, imposed by culture, institutions, and others' expectations. But it is now yours to work with.

Possibilities for Reconstruction

• Narrative revision: Stop saying "I'm not a math person." Say "I learned to avoid math early, and I haven't revisited that."
• Low-stakes exposure: Engage with numbers in contexts free from judgment or high stakes
• Historical examination: Identify specific moments where the identity was constructed; seeing them can loosen their grip
• Modeling alternatives: Seek out people who learned math as adults, who combine creativity with quantitative thinking
• Accepting difficulty: Reconstruction doesn't mean math will become effortless. It means engaging with difficulty rather than avoiding it.

The brain you have now is different from the brain you were born with—shaped by years of avoidance. But brains remain plastic. The question is not whether you can become "a math person" but whether you want to do the labor of reconstruction, and what you would gain by doing so.
