Step 3: Expressing Hurts
Purpose: Share your own pain in a way that can be heard.
The practice: Express hurts using loving speech — without blame, without accusation, with mindfulness. Speak about your experience, not the other's faults.

The key: This is not excuse-making. It is context-sharing. "Because of my history, this is hard for me" — not "My history justifies my behavior."
Closing the Ceremony
After all steps are complete:
Acknowledgment: Thank each other for participating. This practice takes courage.
Physical connection:

- Bow to each other
The return: Let the ceremony be complete. Don't immediately rehash or analyze. Let it settle.

Obstacle 2: "They'll use my regrets against me"
Response: This risk exists. But Beginning Anew creates a container of trust. Your vulnerability often inspires theirs. And even if it doesn't "work," expressing genuine regret transforms you.
Obstacle 3: "When I share my hurt, they get defensive"
Response: This is common. Stay with loving speech — no accusations, no "you always" or "you never." Share your experience only. If they become defensive, you might say: "I'm just sharing how I felt. I'm not saying you did anything wrong."

Dear friend, the desire to repair is itself the beginning of repair. Your heart is already moving toward your sister.
I would like to offer you a practice called Beginning Anew. It comes from the Plum Village tradition, and it has helped heal many relationships.
Here is what I suggest: Invite your sister to sit with you for a conversation. Not a "we need to talk" conversation — those often go badly. Instead, say: "I'd like us to try something. A practice I learned. It has four parts, and it might help us."
Begin with appreciation. Yes — even now. Think of three specific things you genuinely appreciate about your sister. Not general things ("you're nice") but specific things ("I appreciate how you called to check on me when I was sick two years ago"). Start there. Water the flowers before you pull the weeds.
Then, express your own regrets. What have you done that might have contributed to this distance? Not what she did wrong — what you did. "I regret that I raised my voice." "I regret that I left without saying goodbye." This is not weakness. This is strength. It says: "I am willing to look at myself honestly."
Only then, share your hurt. And share it gently: "When this happened, I felt..." Not "You did this terrible thing." Just: "This is what I experienced."
Finally, if there are old patterns — wounds from childhood, ongoing challenges — you might share those: "I react strongly when I feel dismissed, because of how things were in our family."
This practice won't fix everything in one conversation. But it will begin something. And "beginning anew" is exactly what you need.
