Campbell's Bliss Framework
What Bliss Is NOT
Campbell was dismayed that "follow your bliss" became misinterpreted as hedonism. He clarified:
"If your bliss is just your fun and your excitement, you're on the wrong track. I mean, you need instruction. Know where your bliss is. And that involves coming down to a deep place in yourself."
Bliss is not:
- Momentary pleasure
- Escapist fantasy
- What's easy or comfortable
- What others will approve of
- Excitement or thrill-seeking
- Self-indulgence
What Bliss IS
Campbell derived "bliss" from the Sanskrit concept of ananda—one of the three aspects of transcendence (Sat-Chit-Ananda: Being-Consciousness-Bliss).
Bliss is:
- Deep alignment with your innermost nature
- A sense of being exactly where you're supposed to be
- What you would do even if it were difficult
- What makes you feel most alive (not just happy)
- Often found where your deep gladness meets the world's deep need
- The rapture of being fully who you are
Campbell said: "I don't know whether my consciousness is proper consciousness or not; I don't know whether what I know of my being is my proper being or not; but I do know where my rapture is. So let me hang on to rapture, and that will bring me both my consciousness and my being."
The Promise of Bliss

Step 3: Identify the Resistance
What stands between them and their bliss? Common resistances:
- Practicality: "I can't make money doing that"
- Worthiness: "Who am I to pursue that?"
- Fear: "What if I fail?"
- Others: "My family would never understand"
- Age: "It's too late for me"
- Skill: "I'm not good enough"
Campbell's response: "You enter the forest at the darkest point, where there is no path. If you follow someone else's path, you are not on your own journey."
Step 4: Trace the Thread
Look for the consistent thread through their happiness moments:
- What theme connects them?
- What capacity was being used?
- What need was being met?
- What value was being expressed?
Step 5: Name the Bliss
Articulate what their bliss might be—not a specific job, but a mode of engagement with the world:
