The Historical Context

At Trafalgar, Nelson faced a Franco-Spanish fleet with more ships and larger vessels. Traditional naval doctrine called for forming a parallel line of battle and trading broadsides. This approach would favor French ships with their larger crews and heavier guns.

Nelson rejected the convention entirely. Instead of forming a parallel line, he divided his fleet into two columns and drove perpendicular into the enemy line. The leading ships took terrible fire with no reply - but once they broke through, they could concentrate against fragments of the enemy fleet while the van sailed uselessly ahead, unable to turn in time to help.

The approach created chaos - a "pell-mell battle" where British gunnery, seamanship, and offensive spirit could prove decisive. What looked like tactical insanity was strategic genius: Nelson chose to fight the battle where his advantages mattered most.
