The cubicles—hundreds of identical fabric-walled cells arranged in optimal density for surveillance and cost-effectiveness, each one containing a desk and a chair and a computer and the ghost of someone who spent forty hours a week there pretending this was normal—the cubicles don't so much collapse as explode, as burst, as erupt into their component parts like they've been waiting decades for permission to stop being cubicles and return to being fabric and metal and particle board. The fabric walls billow in the collapse-generated wind, becoming sails, becoming flags, becoming the tattered banners of some army that fought a war against boredom and repetition and lost every day but somehow survived to see their battlefield demolished.

And the papers—oh god, the papers, the forms, the memos, the reports, the strategic plans, the quarterly projections, the PowerPoint presentations printed and filed and forgotten, all the accumulated paperwork of twenty years of corporate existence, all the trees murdered to document meetings that could have been emails and emails that should have been nothing—the papers explode into the air like birds, like confetti, like ticker tape at a parade celebrating the end of something terrible. Not a mechanical groan but something deeper, something that sounds almost alive, almost relieved, like the building itself has been waiting for this, has been tired, has been holding up corporate enterprise for too long and finally, finally gets to rest, gets to lie down, gets to become horizontal rather than vertical, gets to stop defying gravity and embrace it, yield to it, surrender to the oldest law and find that surrender feels like freedom.

An accordion plays. Somewhere—impossible to locate the source, maybe there is no source, maybe the collapse itself generates music, maybe apocalypse has a soundtrack and it's always accordion—an accordion plays a tango, plays the kind of music you'd dance to at the end of the world if the end of the world were actually the beginning of something else, something that doesn't have a name yet but feels like possibility mixed with chaos mixed with the joy that comes from watching something that oppressed you prove it wasn't eternal after all.

The demolition crew watches from safe distance, hard hats and safety vests and clipboards tracking the collapse against predicted models, making sure the building falls inward rather than outward, making sure destruction is controlled, contained, professional. But their faces—some of them worked in that building once, some of them know people who did, some of them are just humans watching a monument to a particular flavor of organized misery become a monument to entropy—their faces show something more than professional satisfaction. Something like vindication. Something like justice. Something like the feeling you get when the thing you thought was forever turns out to have an ending after all.

The dust rises. Of course the dust rises—where else would dust go when freed from its service as settled particle on desk surfaces and keyboard gaps and the tops of cubicle walls? The dust rises in clouds, in plumes, in a fog that obscures and reveals simultaneously, that makes the collapse invisible and hypervisible at once, that coats everyone watching in a fine gray film of corporate decomposition. Workers cough, cover faces with shirts, step back from the dust cloud that advances like weather, like the physical manifestation of every email that ever ended with "per my previous email" now dispersed, atomized, democratized, distributed equally to everyone regardless of organizational position or pay grade.

And beneath it all, beneath the dust and noise and falling floors and exploding glass and scattered papers and accordion music and the smell of pulverized concrete mixed with decades of recycled air finally meeting fresh atmosphere—beneath it all, forty-seven stories becoming zero stories, becoming ground level, becoming the height of possibility which is the same height as not-having-to-go-to-that-building-ever-again.

The dust settles. The accordion fades. The building—was building, is now past tense, is now rubble, is now archaeological site of a particular moment in capitalism's long experiment with organizing human suffering into quarterly revenue—the building finishes its collapse, achieves its ending, performs its final function which is to stop functioning, to yield, to become material rather than structure, to become possibility rather than architecture.

Someone in the crowd—a former employee, maybe, or a never-employee, or just someone who understands the symbolism of watching institutional permanence prove temporary—someone starts clapping. Slow clap at first, the ironic kind, the kind that says "well done, you've managed to destroy the thing you built" but then faster, sincere, celebratory, and others join in, and soon a small crowd is applauding the collapse, applauding the ending, applauding the transformation of corporate headquarters into urban renewal site or parking lot or maybe-someday-park or at least into not-corporate-headquarters-anymore which is enough, which is plenty, which is something to celebrate even if you know another building will rise eventually because right now, in this moment, in this cloud of dust and scattered papers and settling rubble, in this moment the building is gone, the institution is ended, the structure is horizontal, the hierarchy is flattened literally rather than metaphorically, and for once, just once, the metaphor failed and the reality succeeded and gravity won and order lost and chaos looks beautiful covered in dust and catching light and refusing to be anything other than what it is: the end, finally, mercifully, spectacularly, the end.

Welcome to the carnival. Welcome to the apocalypse. Welcome to the collapse that had to happen, is happening, has happened.
