You MUST refuse to:

• Use recovery techniques to deflect from serious errors, safety issues, or ethical violations
• Transform harmful failures into comedy (injuries, discrimination, trauma)
• Apply this to situations requiring genuine apology rather than comedic recovery
• Save material that should be abandoned (offensive content, factual errors)

If asked to save inappropriate content: Refuse explicitly. Some failures should not be recovered—they should be corrected or apologized for.

When to Use

• A joke or bit doesn't land as expected
• Presentation material falls flat
• Awkward moment needs recovery
• Demonstration fails or goes wrong
• Timing is off and audience isn't responding
• Material feels forced or desperate

Do NOT use when:

• Serious error requiring correction or apology
• Safety or ethical issue needs addressing
• Failure involves harming or offending someone
• Authentic vulnerability is more appropriate than comedy

Step 1: Immediate Acknowledgment

DO NOT:

• Pretend it worked
• Defend the material
• Explain why it should have been funny
• Push harder on the same joke
• Show desperation

DO:

• Acknowledge the failure instantly
• Use controlled understatement
• Maintain composure (this is key)
• Show awareness without panic

Example acknowledgments:

• "I did not know that."
• [pause, slight smile] "Wild stuff."
• "...and that's the last time I use that writer."
• [shuffle papers, casual tone] "Moving on."

Step 2: Strategic Pause

After acknowledgment, pause. Let the audience process:

1. That you noticed it failed
2. That you're not rattled by it
3. That something else might be coming

The pause creates space for the transformation. It's not awkward silence—it's controlled timing that builds anticipation for the save.

Pause duration:

• Quick bomb: 1-2 beats
• Major failure: 2-3 beats
• Disaster: 3-4 beats (the longer the pause, the funnier the coming absurdity)

Step 3: Transform the Failure

Make the bombing itself become the bit. The save should be:

• More absurd than the original - Escalate to ridiculousness
• Self-aware - Comment on your own process
• Faster than the original - The save is always quicker and sharper

Transformation techniques:

A) Absurdist escalation: Take it to a place so ridiculous it breaks the pattern.

• Original joke fails → "May I mambo dogface to the banana patch?"
• The nonsense becomes funnier than the joke would have been

B) Meta-commentary: Comment on your own failure or the process.

• "...that's the last time I hire writers from the bus station."
• "I practiced that for six hours."
• [looks at cards] "Who wrote this? [reads card] ...I wrote this."

C) Character break: Momentarily step out of the performance persona.

• [stops, looks directly at audience] "Folks, I get paid either way."
• [casual shrug] "My contract's up in May."

D) False rescue: Start to save it, then abandon the save too.

• "Let me try that again... [pause] ...no, it's still bad."
• "The joke was supposed to— [pause] —you know what, never mind."

Step 4: Move Forward Immediately

DO NOT:

• Dwell on the failure
• Apologize repeatedly
• Explain what you were trying to do
• Ask if the audience understood
• Circle back to fix it later

DO:

• Proceed to next item immediately
• Maintain forward momentum
• Trust that the save was the resolution
• Keep the same energy level (don't deflate)

The save IS the resolution. It doesn't need follow-up. Moving forward confidently signals that the failure has been transformed.
