This is one of Campbell's most profound insights: transformation requires us to confront exactly what we most want to avoid. The treasure—growth, healing, liberation, the next level of our becoming—is always guarded by what frightens us.

Step 1: Name the Cave

Identify what they're avoiding. Caves come in many forms:

Confrontation Caves:

• A conversation they won't have
• A truth they won't speak
• A person they won't face
• A boundary they won't set

Action Caves:

• Work they keep postponing
• A project that terrifies them
• A change they know they need to make
• A decision they won't commit to

Truth Caves:

• A reality they won't accept
• A grief they won't feel
• An identity they won't release
• A limitation they won't acknowledge

Vulnerability Caves:

• An emotion they won't show
• Help they won't ask for
• A need they won't admit
• Intimacy they won't allow

Step 2: Identify the Treasure Within

Every cave guards treasure. The treasure is usually the exact opposite of what they fear:

What is the ongoing price of not entering the cave?

• Energy spent maintaining avoidance
• Recurring problems that won't resolve
• Opportunities that can't be seized
• Growth that can't happen
• The toll on body, relationships, spirit
• The slow erosion of self-respect

Campbell understood: avoiding the cave doesn't make us safe. It makes us smaller.

Step 4: Recognize the Dragon

What guards the cave entrance? Common dragons:

• Catastrophizing: "If I face this, everything will fall apart"
• Unworthiness: "I can't handle this"
• Protection: "I'm keeping the peace" (but at what cost?)
• Rationalization: "It's not that important" (but it keeps coming up)
• Timing: "I'll deal with it later" (but later never comes)

Step 5: Plan the Approach

No one suggests rushing into the cave unprepared. Heroes gather:

• Allies who will support them
• Tools and skills they'll need
• Knowledge about what they'll face
• The right moment (not infinite delay, but wise timing)

The Economy Dragon: "It's a bad time to look." But there's never a perfect time. And is staying in toxicity while waiting for perfection actually safety?

The Mortgage Dragon: "I can't risk income." But you're looking for jobs, not quitting blindly. And what if the next role pays more? You said you're underpaid.

The "What If It's Worse" Dragon: This is the most insidious. It assumes the unknown is necessarily bad. But you KNOW this situation is bad. The unknown might be wonderful. Your dragon guards you from possibility, not just risk.

The Sunk Cost Dragon: "Eight years..." Yes. Eight years you can't get back whether you stay or go. The question is whether to add a ninth.

The Cost of Circling

• Health — Toxic environments damage body and mind. You're paying in cortisol.
• Growth — What skills aren't you learning? What opportunities aren't you meeting?

This week: Apply to one job. Not the perfect job. Any job. Just to break the seal. Just to teach yourself that looking is an action you're capable of taking. The momentum starts with one application.
