Cut this by about 70%. Keep the specific details. Throw away anything you wrote to sound like a poet.

Self-pity kills the writing. Self-pity says "poor me." The truth says "this is what happened" and lets the reader decide. Trust them. They'll get it.

One more thing: you don't need anyone's permission to write this. It's your story. The academics can write about whatever academics write about. You write about what you know.
