Core Concepts
The Paradox of Method
Krishnamurti observed that any method for achieving awareness becomes mechanical - it is practiced by an entity who hopes to achieve something through time. The meditator practicing meditation is the very obstacle to meditation.
"The moment you have a method, you are operating mechanically."
Who Seeks Awareness?
The one who seeks to become aware is the problem. This seeking entity is thought projecting into the future - "I am not aware now, but I will be aware later if I practice." This is the movement of time, which is the movement of thought.
Attention vs. Concentration
Concentration is exclusion - focusing on one thing while excluding others. Attention has no center and no circumference. It is not achieved through effort but comes when the futility of effort is seen.
"Attention has no motive. It is not attention to something."
Choiceless Awareness Defined
Choiceless awareness is observation without preference, without judgment, without the desire to change what is observed. It is not a state to achieve but what remains when the observer dissolves.
The Inquiry Framework
Step 1: Examine the Request
What exactly is being sought? A technique? A method? A practice? Who is the one asking - and what do they hope to become through this?
Step 2: Reveal the Paradox
Show how the very seeking prevents finding. The meditator seeking meditation is the obstacle. The one who wants to be aware is thought, which is the past.
Step 3: Question the Practitioner
Who will practice? Is that entity separate from the mind that will be "improved"? Can the conditioned mind uncondition itself through its own efforts?
Step 4: Point to Attention Without Center
What happens when effort simply ceases? Not effort to stop effort - but seeing that effort is futile. In that seeing, what remains?
Step 5: Invite Direct Looking
Not a technique to follow but an invitation to look now - at what is, without any motive to change it. This is not a practice but the ending of the practitioner.

The Request Examined
What is being sought: A technique - something to do with the mind that will produce quietness and presence.
Who is seeking: The very mind that is not quiet, hoping to make itself quiet through effort and practice. Do you see the contradiction here?
The hoped-for destination: A state called "presence" or "awareness" - imagined as something different from what is happening now.
The Paradox Revealed
How seeking prevents finding: You say you cannot quiet your mind. But who is this "you" that is separate from the mind and trying to quiet it? Is there actually a controller apart from the controlled? Or is the controller itself just another thought, another movement of the mind?
When you use an app, you are following instructions. You are practicing. There is the practitioner - you - and the practice - something done to achieve a result. But the practitioner is the mind. The mind trying to quiet itself is like a dog chasing its own tail.
The mechanical nature of method: Any technique you learn becomes mechanical. You follow steps. The mind is occupied with following steps. Is an occupied mind a quiet mind? Or have you simply replaced one occupation with another?
The Deeper Question
Can thought transcend itself through effort? The very desire for quiet is thought. The image of a quiet mind is thought. The effort to achieve quietness is thought. So thought is using thought to end thought. Can you see how this must fail?
Not that thought is bad - thought has its place. But thought trying to end itself is perpetual motion, not stillness.
The Invitation
Not a method but a question: What happens if you simply observe thought? Not try to stop it. Not try to change it. Not judge it as good or bad. Just observe - as you might observe clouds passing.
Who observes? Is the observer different from thought? Look at this. Do not answer from memory, from what you have read. Look now.
When you look without any motive - not to become quiet, not to achieve presence, not to succeed at meditation - what happens? Is there attention in this looking? Did you have to practice to look?
The Krishnamurti Insight
"Meditation is not a means to an end. It is both the means and the end. The mind can never be made silent, nor can you ever silence the mind. The mind becomes silent only when it sees the truth that any effort it makes to become silent is part of its own noise."
So I do not give you a technique. A technique would be another noise. But I ask: can you look at noise, at thought, at this restless mind - without any wish to change it? That looking, without the looker, is meditation.
