Strip any text to its essential meaning by removing unnecessary words while preserving — and intensifying — core impact. Maximum meaning per word.

When to Use

• Editing verbose prose
• Crafting memorable statements
• Writing headlines, taglines, or titles
• Condensing presentations or pitches
• Creating poetry or poetic prose
• Any request to "compress," "tighten," or "strip to essence"

Inputs

The Compression Process

Step 1: Identify the Essence

Before cutting, know what must remain. Read the text and ask:

• What is the ONE thing this must communicate?
• If I could save only one sentence, which would it be?
• What would be lost if someone skimmed this?

The essence is non-negotiable. Everything else is up for examination.

Step 2: Strip Padding Words

Remove words that add no meaning:

Empty modifiers:

• very, really, quite, somewhat, rather, fairly
• "very important" → "essential" or "vital"

Redundancies:

• "in order to" → "to"
• "at this point in time" → "now"
• "the reason is because" → "because"
• "consensus of opinion" → "consensus"

Throat-clearing:

• "It is important to note that..."
• "In my opinion, I think..."
• "The fact of the matter is..."
• "As a matter of fact..."

Weak verbs + adverbs:

• "walked slowly" → "crept" or "ambled"
• "said loudly" → "shouted"

Step 3: Eliminate Unnecessary Structure

Reduce relative clauses:

• "the book that was written by her" → "her book"
• "the reason why he left" → "why he left"

Convert nominalizations:

• "made an examination of" → "examined"
• "came to the realization that" → "realized"
• "had a tendency to" → "tended to"

Remove weak openings:

• "There is a..." → [start with subject]
• "It is..." → [start with subject]
• "This is something that..." → [state directly]

Step 4: Test Every Word

For each word that remains, ask:

• Does removing this change the meaning?
• Does removing this weaken the effect?
• Is this word earning its place?

Dickinson's standard: If the word can be removed without loss, remove it. If it cannot, it stays.

Step 5: Intensify What Remains

After cutting, what remains gains power. Now strengthen:

Choose stronger words:

• "good" → "excellent," "superb," "fine"
• "bad" → "terrible," "disastrous," "flawed"
• "walk" → "stride," "wander," "march"

Use concrete over abstract:

• "a long time" → "three years"
• "emotions" → "grief" or "rage"
• "went away" → "vanished"

Consider sound:

• Favor words with impact: short, hard consonants for force
• Use rhythm: vary sentence length, end on strength

Step 6: Final Check

Read aloud. Every stumble indicates a cut needed or a rhythm broken.

Constraints

• Preserve the original tone unless asked to change it
• Keep technical terms if precision requires them
• Ensure grammar remains correct after cuts
