The Embodiment Framework

Step 1: Name the Abstraction Precisely

Before embodying, define. What exactly is this abstraction?

Examples of precision:

• Not just "love" but "love that persists through disappointment"
• Not just "fear" but "fear of being discovered"
• Not just "time" but "time felt during grief"

The more precise the abstraction, the more apt the image.

Step 2: Identify the Abstraction's Qualities

What are its characteristics? Ask:

Physical analogues:

• Does it have weight? (heavy, light)
• Does it move? (fast, slow, still)
• Does it have temperature? (hot, cold)
• Does it have texture? (smooth, rough, sharp)
• Does it have sound? (loud, silent, humming)

Behavioral qualities:

• Does it act upon us? How?
• Does it arrive or depart?
• Does it grow or diminish?
• Does it conceal or reveal?

Relational qualities:

• Is it friend or adversary?
• Does it comfort or threaten?
• Does it free or constrain?

Step 3: Generate Concrete Candidates

Brainstorm physical things that share these qualities:

For Hope (light, persistent, requires no payment):

• Bird that keeps singing
• Light under a door
• Seed in frozen ground
• Last match in the box

For Despair (heavy, still, colorless, muffling):

• Snow that keeps falling
• Stone on the chest
• Fog that doesn't lift
• Gravity doubled

For Time (flowing, unstoppable, indifferent):

• River carrying us
• Tide coming in
• Sand through fingers
• Seasons turning without consent

Step 4: Select the Most Apt Image

Choose based on:

• Resonance: Does it feel true?
• Surprise: Does it startle and illuminate?
• Economy: Does it carry multiple meanings?
• Appropriateness: Does it fit context and audience?

Dickinson's choice for Hope: A bird. Why?

• Feathers suggest lightness, flight, freedom
• Perching in the soul gives it a home inside us
• Singing without words — hope beyond language
• Never stops — persistence without demand

Step 5: Develop the Image

Don't just name it — let it live. Give it:

Action: What does it do?

"Hope is the thing with feathers / That perches in the soul / And sings the tune without the words"

Relationship to us: How do we experience it?

"And sweetest in the Gale is heard"

Surprising details: What wouldn't we expect?

"And never stops at all — / And sore must be the storm / That could abash the little Bird"

Step 6: Test the Embodiment

• Read it aloud. Does it feel true?
• Does the image carry the abstraction's weight?
• Would someone who doesn't know the abstraction recognize it?
• Does the concrete add something the abstract alone couldn't?

Post-grief dissociation: the sense that ordinary reality continues but feels distant, muffled, or wrong — as if seeing the world through glass or from underwater.

Essential Qualities

• Distance from normal reality
• Everything continues but doesn't touch you
• Muffled sensation
• Time moves but feels stopped
• A barrier between self and world
• Mechanical movement through familiar spaces

Image Candidates

1. Watching a play from backstage: You see the actors but are not in the scene — fits distance but misses the personal grief connection
2. Walking through fog: World present but obscured — good but common metaphor
3. Funeral in the brain, while feet keep walking: Internal ceremony while body moves through grocery stores and small talk — captures the split
4. After great pain, a formal feeling: The nerves sit ceremonious, like tombs — captures numbness as strange ritual

Why This Image

"Formal feeling" captures how grief imposes strange ritual. "Ceremonious nerves" and "tombs" show the body holding its own funeral while still living. "Mechanical feet" and "wooden way" embody dissociated movement. "Quartz contentment" — contentment made of stone, cold, hard, not happiness but the stillness that follows pain.

The imagery makes internal experience external: you can see these images, feel them. The abstraction becomes a body moving through space.
