Concrete Victim Defense

A methodology for turning abstract injustices into undeniable causes by centering specific victims with names, stories, and circumstances. Ideas become real when they have specific victims to defend and specific villains to oppose. This is the Calas method: make the abstract concrete, make the distant intimate, make the ignorable impossible to ignore.

The Power of Specificity

People can ignore statistics. They cannot easily ignore a person with a name, a family, a story they can see themselves in. The mind that remains unmoved by "thousands suffer" may be transformed by "Jean Calas, father of four, was tortured and executed on the wheel because his son committed suicide and the authorities needed a Protestant to blame."

Abstraction enables distance. Specificity closes it.

Workflow

Step 1: Find the Exemplary Case

Not every victim makes an effective case. Look for:

• Innocence - The clearer the injustice, the more powerful the case. Ambiguous victims create ambiguous responses.
• Relatability - The victim should feel like "someone I know" or "someone I could be" to your audience.
• Documentation - You need facts, dates, names, evidence. Vague accusations are easily dismissed.
• Emblematic quality - The individual case should illuminate the systemic pattern. This victim represents many.
• Stakes - Irreversible harms (death, permanent injury, destroyed families) concentrate attention.

Step 2: Tell the Human Story

Before you argue, narrate. Who was this person before the injustice? What was their daily life? Who loved them? What were their hopes? Build the person in the reader's mind until they are real.

Step 5: Demand Specific Remedy

Vague calls for "justice" dissipate. Specific demands concentrate force. "This verdict must be overturned. This law must be changed. This family must be compensated." Now there's a target.

Step 6: Sustain Attention

Injustice persists partly through forgetting. Keep the victim's name in circulation. Write repeatedly. Create occasions for public attention. Build a network of supporters who will not let the matter drop. The authorities' hope is that you will tire before they do.

Internal memos show they calculated that repairs would cost more than likely lawsuits. Maria's home, her neighbors, her church, her daughter's grave - all buried in toxic mud. The executives who made those calculations still hold their positions. Here are their names."

Abstract version: "Immigration enforcement separates families."

Concrete version: "Elena was brought here at age 3. She is now 23, a nursing student, engaged to be married. She has no memory of the country she was born in, speaks no Spanish, has no family there. Abstract version: "The university fails to protect students from harassment."

Key Principles

1. Names over numbers - A single named victim moves hearts more than statistics. Use the individual to illuminate the many.

2. Story before argument - Build the person first. Let readers know them before they know what happened to them.

3. Specific villains - Don't just blame "the system." Name the mechanisms, the laws, the decision-makers. Create accountability.

4. Pattern through person - The individual case reveals the systemic problem. Show how this victim represents many.

5. Concrete remedies - What specifically should change? Give the audience something to demand.

6. Persistence - Keep the case alive. The opposition counts on being able to wait you out. Don't let them.

Choosing the Right Case

Not every injustice makes an effective campaign. Considerations:

Clarity of injustice: The more complicated the case, the harder to mobilize. An innocent person wrongly convicted is clearer than a guilty person excessively punished. Both may be injustices; one is easier to advocate.

Sympathetic victim: Fair or not, some victims generate more empathy than others. Consider your audience. Who will they identify with?

Provable facts: You will be challenged. Ensure your evidence is solid before going public.

Living or recent: Cases with living victims or recent injustice create more urgency than historical examples.

Representative of pattern: The case should illuminate a systemic problem, not seem like an isolated failure.

Common Pitfalls

• Choosing a complicated victim - Every victim has flaws; choose cases where the flaws don't undermine the argument.
• Letting abstraction creep back in - Keep returning to the name, the face, the specific story.
• Forgetting the remedy - Attention without direction dissipates. What do you want to happen?
• Burning out - Sustained campaigns are exhausting. Build support networks. Take turns.
