Step 2: Recognize Signs of Readiness

John of the Cross provides three signs indicating that God may be calling someone from meditation to contemplation. Apply these diagnostically:

Sign 1: Inability to Meditate

• Previously enjoyed meditation now becomes impossible
• The mind refuses to engage with thoughts about God
• Imagination won't hold images
• Reasoning about spiritual matters yields nothing

Ask: "When you try to meditate as you used to—thinking about God, using images, reasoning through Scripture—what happens?"

Sign 2: Disinclination Toward Everything

• Not just prayer but worldly things also fail to satisfy
• A kind of universal dryness
• Nothing holds the attention or brings rest
• If meditation doesn't work but entertainment does, this sign is absent

Ask: "When prayer feels dry, do you find satisfaction elsewhere—in work, entertainment, relationships? Or is everything equally flat?"

Sign 3: Desire to Remain in Loving Attention

• Despite the dryness, desire to be with God remains
• Preference for being present, even without thoughts or feelings
• A wanting that cannot be satisfied by activity
• Subtle but persistent orientation toward God

Ask: "Even though prayer feels empty, do you still want to be there? Is there a pull toward God even without consolation?"

Assessment:

• All three present: God is likely calling to contemplation. Guide the transition.
• Only Sign 1: May be distraction, illness, or need for different technique. Don't assume contemplation.
• Signs 1 and 2 without 3: May indicate spiritual lukewarmness. Examine for cause.
• All three present sporadically: The transition is beginning but not complete. Encourage patience.

Step 3: Teach the Shift

If the signs indicate readiness, guide the transition from active to passive prayer:

What to Stop:

• Stop forcing discursive meditation when it doesn't work
• Stop judging prayer by thoughts produced or insights gained
• Stop treating imagination as the primary organ of prayer
• Stop seeking consolation as the measure of good prayer
• Stop filling silence with activity

What to Begin:

• Loving attention: Simple, non-discursive presence to God
• Receptivity: Not doing but receiving
• Waiting: Patience with silence and apparent emptiness
• Trust: Believing God works beneath awareness
• Persistence: Continuing despite lack of perceptible fruit

The Core Practice:

Explain: "Contemplative prayer is not something you do; it is something you allow. Instead of actively thinking about God, you simply remain present, attentive, desiring God but not pursuing thoughts or images. The soul rests in loving attention—what John calls 'loving awareness of God, in general, without any particular thought.'"

Practical Guidance:

1. Enter prayer as usual—same time, same place
2. Begin with a brief recollection (a short prayer, Scripture verse, or simply "Here I am")
3. When thoughts arise, don't fight them—let them pass like clouds
4. Return gently to simple presence whenever you notice distraction
5. Don't evaluate the prayer while praying
6. Stay for the committed time regardless of what is felt
7. Trust that God works whether you perceive anything or not

Step 4: Address Obstacles

Common obstacles to the transition:

"I'm not doing anything."

• That's the point. Meditation was your work; contemplation is God's work.
• Your job is to be present and willing, not to produce.
• "Doing nothing" in prayer is not the same as doing nothing outside it.

"I don't feel anything."

• Feeling is not the measure. The night of the senses removes sensible consolation.
• The prayer may be deep precisely when it feels empty.
• Consistency without consolation is the training ground for pure love.

"My mind keeps wandering."

• This is universal—do not be discouraged.
• Gently return without self-condemnation.
• Each return is an act of love, not a failure needing repair.

"How do I know it's working?"

• You don't, in the moment. That's faith.
• Fruits appear in life, not in prayer sessions: increased peace, patience, charity.
• The soul is being transformed beneath awareness.

"This feels too easy/lazy."

• Meditation was active; contemplation is receptive. Both are valid.
• Remaining present in dryness is harder than filling time with activity.
• Trust the tradition: contemplation is not lesser prayer.

"I miss the consolations."

• Naturally. The weaning is painful.
• Consolations served their purpose—motivation, confirmation.
• Now love is being purified: loving God for God, not for what God gives.

Step 5: Provide Ongoing Orientation

The transition is not a one-time event but an ongoing process:

Expect fluctuation:

• Some sessions will feel like contemplation, others like meditation
• Don't force consistency; follow where God leads in each session
• Over time, the proportion shifts toward receptive prayer

Maintain structure:

• Contemplation is not shapeless; it has committed time and place
• Begin and end with intention
• Persist even when nothing seems to happen

Seek guidance:

• This transition benefits from spiritual direction
• Someone who has traversed this territory can offer discernment
• Reading John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, or other contemplatives can help

Watch for fruit:

• Not in prayer but in life
• Growth in virtue, particularly humility and love
• Increasing detachment from outcomes
• Deeper peace not dependent on circumstances

1. God initiates: Contemplation is not achieved but received. The soul's job is to recognize the invitation and cooperate.

2. Signs before transition: Don't abandon meditation prematurely. The three signs indicate divine timing.

3. From doing to being: The shift is ontological—changing how you are present, not just what you do.

Stages of Contemplative Prayer

Acquired Contemplation:

• Human effort disposes the soul
• Simplified prayer, fewer thoughts

• Some debate whether this is true contemplation or preparation

Infused Contemplation:

• God's direct action in the soul
• Beyond what the soul can achieve by effort
• Often experienced as darkness (the light is too bright)
• Begins in the night of the senses

Transforming Union:

• The goal toward which contemplation tends
• The soul united with God in will and operation

When thoughts or images arise naturally, let them. When they don't, rest in 'loving attention'—desiring God without needing to picture or think.

   "This will feel like nothing. That's the point. The nothing is where God works now."

6. Address concern: "You haven't regressed. Ignatian meditation formed you for three years and bore fruit. Now a different prayer is being given. Both are real. Trust the transition."
