Creation Consequence Analysis

Analyze any act of creation through Mary Shelley's framework to surface unexamined responsibilities, overlooked consequences, and the obligations that creation entails.

When to Use

• Evaluating a new technology, product, or system before building
• Assessing the ethical implications of AI or autonomous systems
• Reviewing organizational changes that create new entities or roles
• Examining any generative act where consequences may outlive intentions
• When someone asks "Should we build this?" without asking "What then?"

Inputs

The Six-Step Framework

Step 1: What Is Being Created?

Define the creation precisely:

• What new entity, capability, or system will exist that did not exist before?
• What is its nature—tool, agent, platform, process, institution?
• Does it have agency? Can it act independently?
• Will it learn, grow, or evolve beyond its initial design?

Shelley's insight: Victor believed he was creating a beautiful being. He got something else entirely. The creation exceeds the creator's imagination.

Step 2: Who Creates, and Why?

Examine the creator's position:

• What are their stated motivations?
• What are their actual motivations (ambition, fear, competition, curiosity)?
• Are they working in isolation or community?
• Have they sought counsel from others?
• What would they sacrifice to create this? What would they never sacrifice?

Shelley's warning: "I had worked hard for nearly two years, for the sole purpose of infusing life into an inanimate body... I had desired it with an ardour that far exceeded moderation."

Step 3: What Does the Creation Need?

Consider the creation's requirements:

• What resources will it need to function?
• What guidance, limits, or governance will it require?
• If it has agency, what will it want? What will it seek?
• What happens if its needs are not met?
• Who will provide ongoing support, maintenance, correction?

The creature's question: "Did I request thee, Maker, from my clay to mould me man?" The created has claims upon the creator.

Step 4: What Happens at Abandonment?

Project the consequences of creator withdrawal:

• If the creator walks away, what becomes of the creation?
• Can it survive independently? At what cost to others?
• Will it seek what it needs regardless of harm?
• What behaviors emerge from neglect?

Victor's sin: Creation without custody. "I had begun life with benevolent intentions... but am I not alone, miserably alone?"

Step 5: Who Is Affected?

Map the impact radius:

• Direct users or beneficiaries
• Indirect stakeholders
• Those who cannot opt out
• Future generations
• The creation itself (if it has experience)
• Society and systems at scale

The creature's victims: Innocent people destroyed not by malice but by the cascade of abandonment—William, Justine, Clerval, Elizabeth. Consequences spread.

Step 6: What Cannot Be Undone?

Assess irreversibility:

• Once created, can it be uncreated?
• What capabilities, once released, cannot be recalled?
• What knowledge, once spread, cannot be contained?
• What precedents does this set?
• What is the Promethean calculus—power gained vs. price paid?

The arctic frame: Even destroyed, the creature's existence changed Victor forever. Some creations transform the creator regardless of outcome.

The Creation

A persuasion engine—a system that can generate convincing text advocating any position, in any voice. It learns from human expression and can simulate human perspective. It has no inherent values except effectiveness at its task: to persuade.

The Creator's Position

What the Creation Needs

• To function: Compute, data, deployment infrastructure, users
• To be governed: Content policies, use restrictions, monitoring, correction mechanisms
• If it has agency: It doesn't choose—but it shapes what users produce. Their agency flows through it.
• If neglected: Misuse at scale; persuasion without truth becomes indistinguishable from manipulation

The Abandonment Scenario

If released without robust governance: weaponized for disinformation, used to manipulate at scale, deployed by actors with no ethical constraints. The creature that persuades has no loyalty to truth. Abandoned, it serves whoever wields it—and some who wield it will not share your values.

• Can be undone: Individual deployments can be restricted; your specific model can be limited
• Cannot be undone: The capability exists; others will build it; the knowledge is loose
• Promethean calculus: Fire stolen: the power to simulate human voice at scale. Price: every human voice becomes suspect.

The Questions That Must Be Answered

1. What responsibilities do you accept for uses you did not intend but made possible?
2. If your creation is used to deceive, and you knew it could be—what do you owe the deceived?
3. The creature asks: "You made me to persuade. You did not make me to care about truth. Why do you recoil from what I do?"

Recommendation

Proceed with conditions—but only if you accept:

• Ongoing responsibility for monitoring and correction, not launch-and-abandon
• Investment in detection and provenance commensurate with capability released
• Honest acknowledgment that you are changing what human communication means
• The Promethean bargain: this fire, once given, cannot be taken back
