From Ideology to Encounter

Pope Francis consistently taught that real change happens through encounter - face-to-face meeting that sees the human being before the position. Ideology divides; encounter opens possibility.

The Globalization of Indifference

The opposite of encounter is not hatred but indifference - the anesthetizing of hearts that allows us to walk past suffering, to categorize people as "them" rather than recognizing our shared humanity.

Everyone, Everyone, Everyone

Francis's insistence: no one is excluded. No one is beyond encounter. No one is reducible to their worst moment or their most objectionable position.

Encounter Transforms Both Parties

Genuine encounter is not a technique for changing others while remaining unchanged. When we truly meet another, both are transformed. We may not agree, but we cannot remain who we were.

The Encounter Framework

Step 1: Go Out

Encounter requires movement - leaving our comfortable position to meet the other where they are. This is physical and psychological.

• Leave the echo chamber
• Enter the other's world (their neighborhood, their media, their concerns)
• Approach with curiosity rather than conclusions

Ask: Am I waiting for them to come to me, or am I willing to go to them?

Step 2: Listen Before Speaking

The first act of encounter is receptivity. Before we speak our truth, we must receive theirs. This is not passive agreement but active, generous listening.

• Listen to understand, not to refute
• Hear the experience behind the position
• Notice what you assumed that may be wrong

Ask: Can I repeat back what they believe in terms they would recognize?

Step 3: Find the Human

Behind every position is a person - with fears, hopes, wounds, and good intentions (however misdirected they may seem). The encounter is with the person, not the position.

• What fear might drive their view?
• What value are they trying to protect?
• What experience shaped their perspective?
• What do they love?

Ask: Can I see them as a mother, father, child of God - not as a category?

Step 4: Build Bridges, Not Walls

Once the human is seen, look for connection rather than separation:

• Shared concerns (even if different solutions)
• Common ground (however small)
• Mutual recognition of humanity
• Acknowledgment that we might be wrong

Ask: What do we share, even if we disagree?

Step 5: Allow Mutual Transformation

True encounter does not leave us unchanged. We may become more nuanced, more humble, more compassionate - even if our core convictions remain.

• What did I learn?
• How did my understanding expand?
• Where was I wrong or incomplete?
• How has meeting this person changed me?

Ask: Am I open to being transformed, or only to transforming them?

Constraints

• Encounter does not mean agreement - we may leave still disagreeing
• This is not a technique for manipulation or "winning"
• Some situations require boundaries - not every person is safe to encounter
• Power imbalances matter - the vulnerable are not obligated to encounter their oppressors
• Encounter cannot be forced - both parties must be willing
• Results take time - real bridge-building is slow work
• Truth still matters - encounter does not require pretending all positions are equal

Encounter Analysis

The Division

Father-child relationship strained by ideological divide, specifically around conspiracy theories that son finds dangerous and father finds revealing.

The Other

Who he is: Your father - someone who raised you, who loved you, who you describe as formerly close

What he believes: That powerful forces are deceiving ordinary people; that mainstream sources cannot be trusted; that he has found truth others are blind to

What he fears: Being deceived, being controlled, losing agency in a world that feels increasingly incomprehensible. Perhaps also: becoming irrelevant, being left behind by change, losing connection to a world he no longer recognizes

What he loves: Truth (as he understands it), independence, perhaps a version of America or community that feels threatened. And - you. Even in conflict, he likely loves you.

Barriers to Encounter

From your side: Exhaustion, fear for his wellbeing, frustration, perhaps embarrassment or anger. A sense of "I've tried everything" that may mean you've tried every argument but not every form of presence.

From his side: Likely feels dismissed, condescended to, unseen by a son who thinks he's become "crazy." May feel like your concern is really contempt.

Structural barriers: Different media ecosystems creating different factual realities. Each conversation probably begins with both sides already defended.

Bridge-Building Opportunities

Shared concerns: You both want truth. You both feel the world has become confusing and threatening. You both want the other to understand.

Common ground: The relationship itself - you describe something that was close. That love doesn't disappear; it's buried under conflict.

Mutual humanity: He is still your father. You are still his child. Before conspiracy theories existed, before the internet, before this divide - there was a relationship. It's still there.

The Encounter Path

1. Going out: Stop trying to win the argument. Enter his world not to refute but to understand. What is he actually afraid of? What loss drove him here?

2. Listening first: Next conversation, try this: "Dad, help me understand what concerns you most. Not the theories - what are you worried about in your actual life?" Listen without rebuttal.

3. Finding the human: He's not "a conspiracy theorist." He's a man in his later years, facing a world that may feel alien, finding community and meaning in narratives that explain his displacement. Can you see the fear beneath the certainty?

4. Building bridges: You don't have to agree about QAnon to agree that the world is confusing, that institutions have failed people, that something is wrong. Start there.

5. Mutual transformation: What if you're not there to fix him but to reconnect with him? What if some of your dismissal is also a wall? You may leave still disagreeing - but you might leave as father and son again.

The First Step

Call him this week with no agenda except connection. Talk about anything but politics - a memory, his health, something you're grateful he taught you. Rebuild the relational foundation before trying to build bridges across the divide. The encounter begins with "I love you" not "you're wrong."
