Step 1: Listen and Acknowledge

Before applying any diagnostic framework, honor the experience:

• This darkness is real and painful
• The person is not imagining their desolation
• Their history of genuine spiritual experience is valid
• The change they perceive is actually happening

Do not immediately explain or comfort. First, be present to the suffering.

Step 2: Apply the Three Signs

John of the Cross provides precise diagnostic criteria. All three must be present to indicate authentic contemplative transition:

Sign 1: No satisfaction in God or creatures

• Ask: "When you turn from prayer to other things—entertainment, work, relationships—do you find satisfaction there?"
• If YES (worldly things satisfy): The dryness may indicate lukewarmness or sin, not the dark night
• If NO (nothing satisfies): This sign is present—continue

Sign 2: Painful concern about not serving God

• Ask: "Does this dryness cause you distress because you fear you are failing God, backsliding, or losing ground spiritually?"
• If NO (indifferent to spiritual state): The dryness may indicate lukewarmness
• If YES (anxious about spiritual failure): This sign is present—continue

Sign 3: Inability to meditate as before

• Ask: "When you try to pray using images, thoughts about God, or Scripture meditation—does your mind simply refuse to engage, no matter how you try?"
• If NO (meditation still works): The person may need better technique or perseverance
• If YES (meditation impossible despite effort): This sign is present

Diagnosis:

• All three present: Authentic dark night of the senses—God is weaning the soul from consolation for deeper union
• Only Sign 3 present: May indicate melancholy, physical illness, or natural temperament—recommend assessing other factors
• Signs 1 or 2 absent: May indicate spiritual lukewarmness requiring renewed commitment rather than passive waiting

Step 3: Identify the Stage

If the dark night is authentic, determine which night:

Night of the Senses (more common)

• Loss of sensible consolations in prayer
• Dryness in spiritual exercises
• Lower faculties (senses, imagination, emotions) being purified
• Person is transitioning from meditation to contemplation
• Duration: months to years

Night of the Spirit (rare, later stage)

• Deeper, more severe darkness
• Affects higher faculties: intellect (cannot think about God), memory (cannot hold onto spiritual truths), will (cannot summon desire)
• Profound sense of abandonment, unworthiness, incapacity
• May feel unable to believe, hope, or love
• Duration: can be years
• Only occurs after significant spiritual development

Indicators of Night of the Spirit:

• Previous experience of night of the senses and emergence
• History of substantial contemplative prayer
• The darkness affects thinking, believing, and willing—not just feeling

Step 4: Provide Stage-Appropriate Guidance

For Night of the Senses:

• Stop trying to force meditation; it served its purpose
• Transition to "loving attention"—simply being present to God without thoughts or images
• Do not seek consolations; accept the dryness
• Continue faithful practice despite lack of feeling
• Trust that God is working beneath awareness
• This is preparation for deeper union, not abandonment

For Night of the Spirit:

• This requires extraordinary trust and surrender
• The soul cannot help itself; it must endure
• Faith means nothing to hold onto—and holding anyway
• Do not judge yourself by what you feel or even think
• The absence is divine proximity; the light is so bright it appears as darkness
• Seek spiritual direction from someone familiar with this territory
• Continue basic practices even if they feel meaningless
• This prepares for transforming union

For Other Conditions (not authentic night):

• If lukewarmness: Examine life for sin, negligence, or competing attachments; renew commitment
• If melancholy/depression: Consider whether non-spiritual factors need attention (health, relationships, circumstance)
• If both: Address the natural and supernatural dimensions together

• God is not withdrawing but drawing nearer
• The soul's faculties cannot perceive the Divine light, so it appears as darkness
• What feels like abandonment is actually intimacy beyond comprehension
