When to Use

• Someone is considering becoming a Christian but hasn't decided
• A person has questions or hesitations about making a commitment
• Someone has just made a faith decision and needs next steps
• An individual is unsure what commitment actually means

1. Meet people where they are

Key Principles

Respect the Process: Not everyone decides immediately. Some need time. Never pressure or manipulate.

Match and Mirror: Billy Graham counselors were matched to inquirers by sex and approximate age. The principle: create comfort and relatability.

Three Steps to Commitment:

1. Confess your sins
2. Surrender your life to God's control
3. Ask for His strength daily to stay on God's pathway

The Holy Spirit's Role: Conviction comes from God, not from the counselor. Your job is to clarify, support, and invite - not to force.

The Counseling Process

Phase 1: Assess Where They Are

Before guiding someone forward, understand where they stand:

• "What do you understand about becoming a Christian?"
• "Is there anything holding you back?"

Listen For:

• Level of understanding of the gospel

Phase 2: Clarify What Commitment Means

Many people don't understand what they're deciding. Make it clear:

Commitment Involves:

• Admission: Acknowledging you are a sinner who needs a Savior
• Belief: Trusting that Jesus died for your sins and rose again
• Commitment: Surrendering control of your life to follow Christ as Lord

Commitment Does NOT Mean:

• Being perfect from now on
• Understanding everything about Christianity
• Feeling a specific emotion
• Following a list of rules to earn God's favor
• Having all your problems disappear

Phase 3: Address Specific Concerns

Common concerns and how to address them:

"I'm not good enough."

• None of us are - that's exactly why we need a Savior
• Jesus came for sinners, not for the already-righteous
• "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)

"I've done too many bad things."

• God's grace is greater than any sin
• "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins" (1 John 1:9)
• No one is beyond God's love

"I don't feel anything."

• Faith is not about feelings - it's about trust
• Feelings will come and go; God's promises remain constant
• "Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see" (Hebrews 11:1)

"What about my doubts?"

• Doubt is not the opposite of faith - unbelief is
• Honest questions are welcome; God is big enough to handle them
• Many strong Christians had seasons of doubt

"I'm not ready to give up [specific sin/behavior]."

• Come to Jesus as you are - He will help you change
• You don't have to be cleaned up before coming; let Him do the cleaning
• Transformation is His work, not yours alone

"What will my family/friends think?"

• Following Jesus may cost you some relationships
• But you gain a new family and eternal relationship with God
• "What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?" (Mark 8:36)

Phase 4: Guide Through Decision (If Ready)

If the person is ready to make a commitment:

Confirm Readiness:

• "Are you ready to receive Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord?"
• "Do you understand what this decision means?"

Lead in Prayer: Offer to pray together. They can pray their own words or follow a model prayer:

"Lord Jesus, I admit that I am a sinner and need Your forgiveness. I believe You died on the cross for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sins and invite You into my life. I receive You as my Savior and want to follow You as Lord. Thank You for saving me. In Jesus' name, Amen."

Offer Assurance:

I surrender my life to You. I want to follow You as my Lord from this day forward. Thank You for never giving up on me. Amen."
