Dereflection Technique

Redirect harmful self-focus toward meaning, tasks, or others. Viktor Frankl's logotherapy technique for breaking hyper-reflection cycles where self-monitoring causes or worsens the problem.

When to Use

• Excessive self-monitoring is creating the problem
• Performance anxiety from watching oneself
• Sexual dysfunction from self-focus during intimacy
• Insomnia from monitoring sleep
• Social anxiety from hyper-awareness of how one appears

The Problem of Hyper-Reflection

"Pleasure is, and must remain, a side-effect or by-product, and is destroyed and spoiled to the degree to which it is made a goal in itself."

Many problems are caused or worsened by excessive self-focus:

• Watching yourself during sex kills arousal
• Monitoring your sleep prevents sleep
• Observing your performance disrupts performance
• Tracking your happiness prevents happiness

Frankl called this hyper-reflection—turning inward so intensely that natural processes are disrupted.

Self-Transcendence

Frankl's core insight: Human beings find meaning not through self-focus but through self-transcendence—reaching beyond the self toward meaning, toward others, toward tasks that matter.

"Being human always points, and is directed, to something, or someone, other than oneself."

How Dereflection Works

Dereflection redirects attention:

• FROM: The self, the symptom, the performance
• TO: The task, the other person, the meaning

By shifting focus outward, the natural process (sleep, arousal, fluent speech, relaxation) can occur without self-conscious interference.

The Technique

Step 1: Identify the Hyper-Reflection

• What are they monitoring about themselves?
• How is this self-focus interfering with natural function?
• What would happen if they stopped watching?

Step 2: Identify the Outward Focus

Where should attention go instead?

• Task: The work itself, not performance evaluation
• Other person: The partner, audience, or conversation partner
• Meaning: Why this matters beyond the self
• Engagement: The content, not the container

Step 3: Create the Redirect

Specific instructions for where to place attention:

• Concrete, external focus
• Engaging enough to hold attention
• Connected to meaning or purpose

Step 4: Remove Self-Monitoring Triggers

• Environmental changes
• Removing "checking" behaviors
• Changing self-talk from evaluation to engagement

Constraints

• Dereflection is for hyper-reflection problems, not avoidance problems
• The redirect must be genuinely engaging, not just a distraction
• Connect the outward focus to meaning when possible
• Do not use for problems requiring direct attention (e.g., physical pain that signals injury)

Dereflection Analysis

The Hyper-Reflection Pattern

You are watching yourself during intimacy—monitoring your arousal, evaluating your performance, checking if your body is responding "correctly." This self-observation has become a third presence in your bedroom, interfering with connection and pleasure.

The Interference

Self-focus on: Your arousal level, your performance, your body's response Disrupts natural: Sexual response, intimacy, pleasure Because: Arousal requires losing yourself in the experience; self-monitoring keeps you separate from it. You cannot simultaneously be in the experience and watch yourself having it.

The Dereflection Redirect

From: Your body, your arousal, your performance To: Your wife—her experience, her presence, her response

Specific Redirects

Implementation

Before: Decide in advance that your attention belongs to her, not to yourself. Your job is to be present to another person, not to monitor your own responses.

During: When you catch yourself checking your arousal, gently redirect: "Come back to her." Notice the texture of her skin, the sound of her breathing, what brings her pleasure. Your body will respond on its own if you stop watching it.

Catch phrase: "Come back to her" or simply "Her, not me"

The Meaning Connection

Intimacy is about connection—two people meeting each other, not two people observing themselves. The meaning of sex is not performance metrics; it is presence, union, giving and receiving. When you focus on her, you return to what this is actually about.

The Franklian Insight

Pleasure, like happiness, cannot be pursued directly—it must ensue from self-transcendence. The more you try to observe and force your arousal, the more it retreats. When you forget yourself in attention to your wife, your body remembers what to do.

Your arousal is not your job. Presence is your job.
