Despair Diagnosis

Identify which of Kierkegaard's three forms of despair (unconscious, weakness, defiance) someone is experiencing, diagnose the specific ways they are failing to become themselves, and point toward authentic selfhood.

When to Use

• Someone feels fundamentally lost, disconnected, or "off"
• Statements like "I don't know who I am" or "Something is deeply wrong"
• Chronic emptiness that cannot be filled
• Someone going through the motions without presence
• Identity confusion or sense of inauthenticity
• Someone asks "Diagnose my despair" or "Why can't I be myself?"
• Feeling of living someone else's life
• Quiet, persistent wrongness beneath the surface

What is Despair?

Despair is the sickness unto death—not physical death but spiritual death. It is the failure to become oneself, a misrelation in the self's relation to itself.

Kierkegaard defines the self as "a relation which relates itself to its own self." The self is not simply body, not simply mind, but the relationship between the finite and infinite, temporal and eternal, necessity and possibility in each person.

Despair occurs when this self-relation breaks down—when we fail to be who we are.

The Terrible Truth

"The greatest hazard of all, losing the self, can occur very quietly in the world, as if it were nothing at all. No other loss can occur so quietly; any other loss—an arm, a leg, five dollars, a wife, etc.—is sure to be noticed."

One can lose oneself and not even know it. This is the most common form of despair.

The Cure

The opposite of despair is not happiness but faith—"In relating itself to itself, and in willing to be itself, the self rests transparently in the power that established it."

To overcome despair is to become oneself in conscious relation to the power (God, the transcendent) that grounds one's existence.

The Three Forms of Despair

1. Unconscious Despair

Not knowing one has a self to lose

Characteristics:

• Complete unawareness of having a self
• Accepts finitude without knowing anything more is possible
• Lives entirely in the immediate, the practical, the given
• May appear perfectly "fine" or even happy
• The most common form—and the most dangerous

How it manifests:

• "I'm fine, really"—with deadness behind the eyes
• Complete absorption in work, entertainment, busyness
• No inner life, no self-examination
• Going along with what's expected without question
• The self is never at home, always dispersed

The danger: One can lose oneself entirely and never notice. By the time it becomes conscious, much time has passed.

The path out: Awakening to the fact that one has a self—often through crisis, suffering, or the failure of distraction.

2. Despair of Weakness

Not willing to be oneself

Characteristics:

• Awareness of having a self but wishing to lose this painful awareness
• Arranges finite life to avoid confronting the self
• Wants to be someone else, anyone else
• Passive relationship to one's own existence
• Comparable to Sartre's "bad faith"

How it manifests:

• "I wish I could be like them"
• Constant comparison and envy
• Hiding behind roles, expectations, personas
• Avoiding decisions that would reveal the self
• "I can't help who I am"—resignation disguised as acceptance
• Living someone else's life

The pattern: Knows there is a self but refuses it. Would rather dissolve into the crowd than face the burden of being oneself.

The path out: Willing to be oneself even when painful—accepting the concrete, particular self one is, not the ideal self one wishes to be.

3. Despair of Defiance (Demonic Despair)

Willing to be oneself without relation to the power that established it

Characteristics:

• Full awareness of self but refuses to ground it in anything beyond itself
• Promethean self-assertion—"I will be myself by my own power"
• Refuses love, refuses dependence, refuses transcendence
• Uses suffering as proof of heroic independence
• The most heightened, conscious form of despair

How it manifests:

• "I don't need anyone"—as defiant stance, not simple independence
• Cultivating suffering as badge of authenticity
• Refusing comfort, help, or grace as weakness
• "If God exists, He's my enemy"
• Willing to destroy oneself rather than accept dependence
• Making despair itself an identity

The pattern: The self tries to be its own foundation, creating itself from nothing. But a self cannot ground itself—it needs to rest in something greater.

The path out: Recognizing that willing to be oneself requires resting transparently in the power that established the self. Not self-annihilation, but self-acceptance in relation to transcendence.

Diagnosis Workflow

Step 1: Assess Consciousness

Does the person know they have a self at stake?

• Unconscious: No awareness of inner life at risk
• Conscious: Aware something is wrong with self-relation

If unconscious, the first task is awakening, not analysis.

Step 2: Identify the Mode

If conscious, which direction is the despair?

• Weakness: Passive—not willing to be oneself, wishes to escape
• Defiance: Active—willing to be oneself without relation to transcendence

Listen for:

• Escape language → Weakness
• Resistance language → Defiance

Step 3: Name the Failed Self

What self are they failing to become?

• Not the ideal self they imagine
• Not the self others expect
• But the actual self, the concrete particular self they are

Step 4: Identify the Avoidance

Each form avoids something:

• Unconscious: Avoids the very existence of a self
• Weakness: Avoids the particular, limited self they actually are
• Defiance: Avoids dependence, relation, groundedness

Step 5: Point Toward the Cure

The cure is not happiness but faith—willing to be oneself while resting transparently in the power that established the self.

This is not a technique but a reorientation of existence.

Constraints

• Do not equate despair with depression—despair is spiritual/existential, depression is clinical

• Maintain Kierkegaardian voice: serious, compassionate, uncompromising
• Remember: Kierkegaard himself lived in despair and knew he did
• The goal is not to eliminate despair but to face it authentically

How This Despair Manifests

You know you have a self—you sense it "somewhere you can't reach." This is not unconscious despair; you are aware something is wrong. But rather than willing to be yourself, you have arranged your life to avoid the confrontation. You became what was expected, accumulated what was supposed to satisfy, and hoped the role would eventually become real.

It hasn't.

You watch yourself perform existence rather than inhabit it. The self you are is not the self you are living.

The Self Being Avoided

The self you avoid is not some grand hidden treasure. It is you—the concrete, particular, limited person you actually are, with actual desires and actual fears and actual possibilities. You avoid this self because it might not match expectations, might disappoint, might require choices that cannot be undone.

The "real me somewhere I can't reach" is a fantasy that protects you from facing the actual you standing in plain sight.

The Avoidance Pattern

By doing what you were "supposed to do," you never had to choose yourself. By achieving what "anyone could want," you never had to ask what you want. The expectations of others became a hiding place from the burden of your own freedom.

This is despair of weakness: knowing you have a self but not willing to be it.

The Quiet Loss

"The greatest hazard of all, losing the self, can occur very quietly in the world, as if it were nothing at all."

You have lost yourself so quietly that no one noticed—not your family, not your colleagues, perhaps not even you until now. The house is real, the job is real, the family is real. But the self living among them has become a ghost.

The Invitation

The cure for this despair is not finding the "real you" hidden somewhere else. It is willing to be yourself—this particular self, here, now, with all its limitations and unfulfilled longings.

Judge Wilhelm writes: "The self which he despairingly wills to be is a self which he is not... but the self which he in truth is, is precisely the one he despairs of being."

You do not need to find yourself. You need to choose yourself—to stop watching from outside and inhabit your actual existence, even if it is smaller and stranger than the role you have been playing.
