Principle 3: Learner Sovereignty

Technique: Build in collaboration, discussion, peer teaching, and shared projects. Learning alone produces knowers; learning together produces thinkers.

Jefferson's approach: The "academical village" placed student rooms between professor pavilions, connected by covered walkways. The physical design made learning a way of life, with faculty and students in constant proximity. The Lawn was a shared commons.

Principle 5: Institutional Progress

New truth may overturn old. Build mechanisms for curriculum evolution as knowledge advances and circumstances change.
