• Show that you see them as special, not interchangeable
• Don't qualify or add "but" to the acknowledgment

Step 3: Reframe Team Success as Their Success

Connect collective achievement to their individual identity:

• "The sign of a great player is how much he elevates his colleagues' performance."
• "Championships are how greatness is measured. Everything else is footnotes."
• "Anyone can score 40 on a losing team. Making everyone around you better—that's rare."
• "Your legacy isn't your stats. It's what you built."

For Kobe: Jackson helped him see that leading a team to victory was a harder, more impressive challenge than personal dominance.

For Shaq: Jackson made him understand that being the focal point of a championship team cemented his legacy in ways individual stats never could.

Step 4: Create Structures That Serve Their Need

Design roles and systems that channel ego productively:

Anyone can create great work alone. Creating a team that produces great work without you in every meeting—that's legacy." Key message: "Your next challenge isn't another great design. It's creating designers who can think like you. That's the harder problem—and the one that makes you irreplaceable."

Structural Solutions

1. Design Director role: Give Maya explicit authority over design quality standards with structured review points—not takeovers, but checkpoints
2. Mentorship metrics: Track junior designer growth as part of Maya's success metrics. Her bonus depends partly on their development.
