Move from abstract to concrete

The mind grasps particulars more powerfully than generalities.

Technique: Replace statistics with singular stories

• NOT: "30,000 people die in car accidents annually"
• BUT: "Maria Gonzalez left for work on Tuesday morning. Her daughter said 'see you tonight, Mom.' She never came home."

Technique: Use sensory detail

• What do they see, hear, feel, taste, smell?
• The specific is always more powerful than the general

When to use: When data feels distant; when the audience hasn't connected emotionally to the stakes

2. Narrative Arc

Tell stories that move

Stories create emotional engagement that arguments cannot.

Structure: Problem - Struggle - Resolution (or tragedy of no resolution)

• Hero the audience can identify with
• Obstacle that creates tension
• Stakes that matter
• Outcome that proves the point

Technique: Begin in the middle of action (in medias res)

• NOT: "Let me tell you about a customer we had..."
• BUT: "At 2 AM, her phone rang. The server was down, and 10,000 customers couldn't access their accounts."

When to use: When humanizing abstract concepts; when building identification with those affected

3. Strategic Rhythm

Use the sound of language to move

The ear processes rhythm before the mind processes meaning.

Techniques:

• Anaphora (repetition at start): "We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight..."
• Epistrophe (repetition at end): "Government of the people, by the people, for the people"
• Tricolon (rule of three): "Blood, sweat, and tears"
• Antithesis (balanced contrast): "Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country"

When to use: For key moments; for lines that should be remembered; for calls to action

4. Direct Address

Speak to them, not at them

Second person ("you") creates involvement; first-person plural ("we") creates solidarity.

Technique: Move from third person to second person at key moments

• From: "Customers often experience frustration when..."
• To: "Imagine you're on hold for 45 minutes. Your lunch break is almost over. What would you do?"

Technique: Use "we" to create shared purpose

• "We have a choice to make"
• "We can't afford to ignore this any longer"
• "We've all felt this frustration"

When to use: For pivotal moments; calls to action; when creating urgency

5. Emotional Contrast

Juxtapose what is with what could be

The gap between current state and possible state creates motivation.

Technique: Paint the negative - then the positive

• First: "This is where we are. The late nights. The frustrated customers. The churn."
• Then: "But imagine if every customer left a conversation feeling heard..."

Technique: Future pacing

• "Six months from now, what do you want to be true?"
• "When we look back on this decision..."

When to use: For motivating change; for making the stakes clear

6. Values Invocation

Connect to what they already care about

Emotions surge when core values are at stake.

Technique: Identify and invoke shared values

• Fairness: "Is it right that...?"
• Security: "What happens to our families if...?"

Technique: Frame the issue in terms of value conflict

Know Your Audience's Emotional Register
