Core Principle

"Ephemeralization is the tendency of technological evolution toward doing more and more with less and less until eventually you can do everything with nothing."

A communications satellite weighing a few tons replaces hundreds of thousands of tons of copper wire. A smartphone contains capabilities that once required buildings full of equipment. The trend of Universe is toward greater capability with fewer resources.

Scarcity is not fundamental. It is a design problem.

Step 1: Separate Function from Method

Identify what must be accomplished versus how it is currently accomplished:

• Function: What is the actual outcome required?
• Current Method: How is this function currently achieved?
• Assumed Requirements: What resources seem necessary?

Key Question: "What is the function we need, stripped of how we currently achieve it?"

Warning: Most "requirements" are actually method-specific. If you eliminate the method, you eliminate those requirements.

Step 2: Challenge Resource Assumptions

Examine each resource requirement:

Questions to ask:

• Is this resource inherent to the function, or specific to the method?
• Could a different approach require none of this resource?
• What would we do if this resource simply didn't exist?
• Has technology made this assumption obsolete?

Step 3: Find the Ephemeralization Precedents

Identify historical examples where similar functions were achieved with radically fewer resources:

Key insight: Technology has consistently done more with less. What developments could continue this trend for your function?

Step 4: Apply the 10x Question

Instead of asking "How can we reduce resources by 10%?" ask:

"What would have to be true to achieve this function with 10% of current resources?"

This question forces breakthrough thinking rather than incremental improvement:

• What assumptions would have to be wrong?
• What technology would need to exist (and might already)?
• What alternative approach would require a fundamentally different resource profile?

Step 5: Explore Alternative Approaches

Generate approaches that achieve the function through different means:

Approaches to consider:

• Substitution: Different resources for same function
• Elimination: Remove steps or components entirely
• Combination: Merge functions to share resources
• Timing: Shift when resources are used
• Sharing: Use resources that already exist elsewhere
• Inversion: Let users/nature do the work

Step 6: Design the Ephemeral Solution

Select and detail the approach that achieves the function with minimal resources:

• What is the new method?
• What resources does it require?
• What is the improvement factor?
• What makes this approach viable now (if it wasn't before)?
