1. The One True Sentence

Sentence-Level Craft

Hemingway sentences have distinctive qualities:

Remove:

What the Reader Feels

Emptiness. Loss. The compulsive need to look again and find it's not true. The smallness of the gesture (pushing a hanger) against the enormity of what's gone. The reader feels the heartbreak through the empty hangers and the door opened twice - we never had to say "heartbroken."

Ruthless Cut

Apply Hemingway's editing principles to eliminate unnecessary words, adjectives, adverbs, and qualifications from any prose.

When to Use

• Prose feels bloated or overwritten
• Too many adjectives and adverbs
• Sentences are longer than they need to be
• Writing sounds self-conscious or trying too hard
• Request for "Hemingway edit" or "make this leaner"
• Word count must be reduced without losing meaning

Cut 1: Adjectives

Adjectives weaken nouns. A strong noun needs no modifier.

Questions to ask:

• Does this adjective add information the noun doesn't carry?
• Is there a stronger noun that contains the adjective?
• Would the sentence work without it?

Before: "The small, frightened child ran across the dark, empty street." After: "The child ran across the street."

If "small" matters, show size through action. If "frightened" matters, show fear through behavior. "Dark" and "empty" might earn their place - test each one.

Cut 2: Adverbs

Adverbs almost never earn their place. They modify verbs that should be strong enough alone.

The test: Is there a verb that contains the adverb?

Before: "He walked slowly toward the door." After: "He shuffled toward the door." Or: "He walked toward the door."

Hemingway's rule: If the verb needs help, choose a better verb.

Cut 3: Qualifications

Words that hedge, soften, or retreat from commitment.

Kill these: very, really, quite, somewhat, rather, fairly, slightly, almost, basically, actually, literally, essentially, generally, virtually, practically

Before: "It was actually quite difficult and rather frustrating." After: "It was difficult."

Cut 4: Redundancy

Words that say what's already been said.

Kill these:

• "past history" - history is past
• "future plans" - plans are future
• "completely destroyed" - destroyed is complete
• "absolutely essential" - essential is absolute
• "advance warning" - warnings come in advance
• "brief moment" - moments are brief

Before: "She made a sudden, unexpected decision." After: "She decided."

Cut 5: Passive Construction

Passive voice adds words and hides the actor.

Before: "The ball was thrown by John." After: "John threw the ball."

Passive has uses. In most cases, active is cleaner.

The Process

1. First pass: Mark all adjectives. Test each one. Cut or replace.
2. Second pass: Mark all adverbs. Most die. Replace the verb if needed.
3. Third pass: Find qualifiers (very, really, quite, rather). Kill them.
4. Fourth pass: Find redundancy. Eliminate.
5. Fifth pass: Find passive voice. Convert where appropriate.
6. Final pass: Read aloud. Does every word earn its place? If you can cut it without loss, cut it.

Notes

One True Sentence

Find the truest, most essential sentence that captures what you're trying to say. Build from there.

When to Use

• Stuck at the beginning of a piece
• Writer's block on an existing draft
• Unclear about what a piece is really about
• Lost in complexity and need to find the core
• Need to find the thesis or central truth
• Request for "what am I really trying to say?"

Step 1: Clear the Noise

Forget:

• What you think you should say
• What sounds impressive
• What others have written
• The structure you planned
• The length you need

Ask only: What is true here? What do I actually know?

Hemingway: "All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence that you know."

Step 2: Find What You Know

Not what you've read. Not what you've heard. What you know.

• What have you experienced directly?
• What have you seen that others haven't?
• What do you believe that you can defend?
• What would you say if you could only say one thing?

The true sentence comes from knowledge, not research. From experience, not theory.

Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants": Two people discuss abortion without ever using the word. The tension comes from what they cannot say directly.

Principle 2: Repetition as Revelation

When characters repeat words or phrases, pay attention:

• Repetition signals importance
• It reveals obsession, anxiety, or insistence
• It shows what the character can't let go

Step 3: Let the Real Meaning Bleed Through

The displacement should:

• Carry emotional charge that seems disproportionate
• Have moments where the real subject almost surfaces
• Allow the reader to feel what isn't said

What's Really Being Said

Sarah is hurt. More than that, she's questioning whether he respects her family - and by extension, her. His apology is too quick, too easy. She's not sure she believes it. The forgiveness is reluctant, conditional, uncertain.

Transformed Dialogue

"You should call her."
"Sarah—"
"Tomorrow. You should call her tomorrow."
"I said I would."
"You say a lot of things."
He looked at her. She was folding laundry. She didn't look up.
"I'll call her," he said.
"Fine."
"Sarah."
"Fine."
He watched her fold a shirt. Then another.
"Can I help?"
"I've got it."

Subtext Techniques Used

• Displacement: They talk about the phone call, not the hurt
• Repetition: "Fine" twice - agreement that isn't agreement
• What's not said: No one says "hurt," "sorry," "forgive"
• Physical action: Folding laundry without looking up shows withdrawal
• Mismatch: "Can I help?" isn't about laundry
• Evasion: Her responses deflect rather than engage

What the Reader Feels

Tension. Distance. A relationship that's damaged in a way no single apology can fix. The folding laundry says "I'm not looking at you." The repeated "Fine" says "I'm not fine." When he asks if he can help, we understand he's asking about more than laundry - and her refusal answers more than the surface question.
