Step 1: Define the Eschatological Horizon

Key Question: "If everything went as hoped, what would we see?"

Step 2: Identify the Contradiction

Name how the promised future contradicts the present:

• What about the current state is unacceptable in light of that future?
• Where does present reality fall short of the promise?

Key Question: "Peace with God means conflict with the world. What conflict does this future create with the present?"

Step 3: Trace Implications Backward

Work from the future back to the present:

• What must be true just before the future arrives?
• What must be true before that?
• What is the first step visible from the present?
• How does each step participate in and anticipate the end?

Key Question: "What present action already participates in that future?"

Step 4: Identify Anticipatory Actions

Determine what present work anticipates and embodies the promised future:

• What actions now would be consistent with that future?
• What practices would train us for that future?
• What would someone living from that future do today?
• How can the future break into the present through our action?

Step 5: Sustain Hope Against Resignation

Develop practices for maintaining orientation toward the future:

• What threatens to collapse hope into mere optimism or despair?
• How do we remember the promise when present is overwhelming?
• What community practices sustain eschatological orientation?
• How do we remain restless without becoming hopeless?

Key Question: "How do we live in the 'not yet' without losing sight of the 'already'?"

The Hope Statement

We do not accept that firefighting is our destiny. The future we are promised - where quality is valued, where engineers thrive, where systems are resilient - contradicts our present and makes it unbearable. We will not pretend the present is acceptable. We will work backward from that future, taking actions today that participate in what is to come. The resignation of "this is just how it is" is not realism but despair wearing realism's mask. We choose hope, which means we choose conflict with the present.
