The Four-Part Structure

Part 1: Establish the Normal World

Begin with a familiar, beloved setting or situation. Paint it in warm, specific detail. The reader must first love what is at risk before they can fear its loss.

Carson's example: "There was once a town in the heart of America where all life seemed to live in harmony with its surroundings... The town lay in the midst of a checkerboard of prosperous farms, with fields of grain and hillsides of orchards..."

Technique:

• Use specific, sensory details
• Create a sense of abundance and vitality
• Make the reader wish they could visit this place
• Establish what "normal" looks like before the change

Part 2: Introduce the Creeping Change

Something shifts. At first subtle, perhaps unnoticed. A blight, a silence, an absence. The change begins small but spreads.

Carson's example: "Then a strange blight crept over the area and everything began to change. Some evil spell had settled on the community: mysterious maladies swept the flocks of chickens; the cattle and sheep sickened and died."

Technique:

• Begin with small disturbances
• Use language of mystery and wrongness
• Show effects spreading through the web of life
• Let wrongness accumulate

Part 3: Reveal the Full Consequence

The loss becomes undeniable. What was vibrant is now silent. What was present is gone. The normal world has become unrecognizable.

Carson's example: "There was a strange stillness. The birds, for example--where had they gone? Many people spoke of them, puzzled and disturbed... It was a spring without voices. On the mornings that had once throbbed with the dawn chorus of robins, catbirds, doves, jays, wrens, and scores of other bird voices there was now no sound; only silence lay over the fields and woods and marsh."

Technique:

• Focus on absence and silence
• Show the human response: puzzlement, disturbance, grief
• Make the loss visceral and specific
• Let the reader feel what is missing

Part 4: Connect to Present Reality

Break the fable's frame. This is not fantasy--it is possibility. The danger is real, and the choice is ours.

Carson's example: "This town does not actually exist, but it might easily have a thousand counterparts in America or elsewhere in the world... A grim specter has crept upon us almost unnoticed, and this imagined tragedy may easily become a stark reality we all shall know."

• Reveal the fable as warning, not fantasy
• Connect to real mechanisms causing real harm
• Establish that the trajectory is underway
• Create urgency: the choice is now

A Summer Without Humming

The World as It Was

The first sign was the apple harvest. One spring the trees flowered beautifully, but the fruit set was sparse, misshapen. The farmer blamed the weather. The next year was worse. She walked through the orchard at peak bloom and listened. The buzzing that had been constant was now intermittent. Some trees stood in silence.

She sprayed pheromone traps and caught handfuls where once she would have caught thousands. The neighbors reported the same: honeybee colonies collapsing, native bees scarce, the hives standing empty like abandoned houses.

The garden changed too. Tomatoes that once produced abundantly now set fewer fruits. Squash blossoms opened and withered unpollinated. The farmer hand-pollinated what she could, transferring pollen with a paintbrush, doing by hand what nature had always done freely.

The Loss Revealed

By the fifth year, summer had become quiet. The children no longer counted moths at the porch light because there were none to count. The windshield of the pickup stayed clean on the longest drives. The apple trees still bloomed each spring, white and pink and fragrant. But the petals fell onto quiet branches. No buzzing. No bees. The farmer walked through the orchard in the strange stillness, remembering what summer used to sound like.

Other things vanished with the insects. The swallows that had nested in the barn for generations stopped returning--there was nothing for them to eat. The bat population crashed. The frogs fell silent in the ponds. Each absence triggered another absence, until the web of life around the farm had holes everywhere.

The neighboring farms tried drones, tiny robots carrying pollen from flower to flower. They tried importing bees from distant places. They tried synthetic pollination techniques. Nothing worked as well as what had worked for a hundred million years.

The farm still produced food, but less, and at greater cost, and with more chemicals to fight the pests that no predator insects controlled. The humming world was gone, and in its place was a silence that felt like holding your breath.

The Warning for Today

This farm does not yet exist--but the trajectory is real.

Insect populations worldwide have declined by 45% in forty years. Flying insect biomass in some regions has dropped 75%. The monarch butterfly population has fallen 90% since the 1990s. Bumblebee species are vanishing from regions where they were once abundant.

The causes are known: habitat destruction, pesticide use, climate change, light pollution disrupting navigation and reproduction. Each cause has solutions. Each solution requires choice and action.

We still hear the humming, though quieter each year. The moths still gather at porch lights, though fewer. The apple trees still buzz in spring, though less. The web still holds, though fraying.

The fable is a warning, not a prophecy. The insects are not yet gone. We have time--barely--to remember what summer should sound like, and to choose a different path.
