Sara Blakely's Core Philosophy

Origin: Sara's father asked at dinner every week: "What did you fail at this week?" If the kids had nothing, he'd be disappointed. High-fives replaced shame.

The reframe: "Failure is not the outcome. Failure is not trying."

The liberation: "My attitude to failure is not attached to outcome, but in not trying. It is liberating."

The Five Components

1. Redefine Failure

Failure = not trying, NOT the outcome.

Questions to ask:

• What's the actual worst case if you try?
• What's the guaranteed outcome if you don't try?
• In 10 years, will you regret the attempt or the inaction?

2. Celebrate Attempts

Every attempt, regardless of outcome, is a success at the meta-level.

Reframe question: What did you fail at this week? (If nothing, that's the real problem.)

3. Detach Outcome from Identity

You are not your results. The attempt reveals character; the outcome reveals circumstances.

Sara's story: Failed the LSAT twice. Sold fax machines for seven years. These weren't failures - they were attempts that led to Spanx.

4. Find the Data

Every "failure" provides information that success never could.

Questions:

5. Prescribe Immediate Action

Fear dissolves in action. Prescribe one small step.
