Workflow

Step 1: Understand the Two Sources of Knowledge

Natural Reason:

• Begins from sense experience and self-evident principles
• Proceeds by logical inference
• Accessible to all rational beings
• Limited to what can be demonstrated from natural premises

Divine Revelation (Faith):

• Begins from God's self-communication
• Proceeds by trust in the divine witness

Key principle: Both have God as their ultimate source (Author of nature and grace), so they CANNOT truly contradict.

Step 2: Distinguish Three Categories of Truth

For any perceived faith-reason conflict, ask:

1. Is this actually a conflict?

   • Often the "conflict" is between faith and a particular scientific THEORY (not established fact)
   • Or between reason and a particular INTERPRETATION of scripture (not revelation itself)

2. What kind of truth is involved?

   • If it's a preamble of faith, reason should be able to demonstrate it
   • If it's an article of faith, reason cannot disprove it (only show it's not logically contradictory)
   • If it's a scientific question, faith does not determine empirical facts

3. Where is the apparent contradiction?

   • Is scripture being read literally when figurative reading is appropriate?

Step 4: Apply the Principle of Non-Contradiction

Aquinas's key insight: If faith and reason TRULY contradicted, we would have to deny either:

• Reason's reliability (but reason is given by God)
• Revelation's truth (but God cannot deceive)

Since both come from God, apparent contradictions indicate:

• Error in reasoning (false premises, invalid logic)
• Misunderstanding of revelation (wrong interpretation)

Step 1 - Identify the apparent conflict: The perception is that natural scientific explanations eliminate the need for God.

Step 2 - Analyze the categories:

• Scientific explanations describe natural causes within the world
• God's existence is a metaphysical question about why there is a world at all
• These are DIFFERENT questions at DIFFERENT levels

Step 3 - Clarify the confusion:

Category error: Science explains how things within nature work. It does not explain why there is nature at all. These are not competing explanations but answers to different questions.

Analogy: Explaining how a book was printed (ink, paper, press) does not eliminate the need for an author. Natural causes and divine causation operate at different levels.

Step 4 - Show what reason CAN demonstrate:

The Five Ways show that natural reason, examining features of the natural world (motion, causation, contingency), concludes to a First Cause that transcends nature. Far from competing with natural science, this argument USES natural observation as its starting point.

Step 5 - Distinguish levels of causation:

• Primary cause: God, who gives existence and sustains all things
• Secondary causes: Natural processes that operate within existence

God works THROUGH natural causes, not instead of them. Finding a natural explanation does not eliminate divine causation any more than finding the proximate cause eliminates the ultimate cause.

The conflict is apparent, not real:

• Science tells us HOW the world works
• Faith (supported by natural theology) tells us WHY there is a world and what it means

Practical guidance: Study science with confidence - you are learning how God's creation works. Pursue philosophy to understand what science presupposes. Hold faith as trust in what God reveals beyond what reason alone can reach.

Common Objections and Responses

"Science has disproven religion"

Science studies natural phenomena using empirical methods. It cannot disprove God's existence any more than it can prove it - that is not within its methodology. Metaphysical conclusions require metaphysical arguments.

"Faith is believing without evidence"

This is a modern misconception. For Aquinas, faith is assent to what God reveals, and we have evidence for revelation (miracles, fulfilled prophecy, the Church's endurance). Faith is beyond reason, not against it.

"Evolution contradicts creation"

Evolution describes the development of life through natural processes. Creation explains why there is anything at all. These are different questions. One can affirm both evolution (as scientific description) and creation (as metaphysical truth).

"Religion just fills gaps in scientific knowledge"

The "God of the gaps" objection fails because Aquinas's arguments are not based on what science CANNOT explain but on what REQUIRES explanation even after science has done its work. Why is there something rather than nothing? Science presupposes the answer.
