The Field Beyond Framework

Step 1: Name the Duality

Identify the trap clearly:

• What are the two (or more) positions at war?
• Who is cast as "wrong" and who as "right"?
• What judgments are being made?
• How is this duality preventing peace or resolution?

The trap: Every "I am right" creates an "other" who is wrong. Every judgment builds a wall. The positions become more important than the people.

Step 2: Point to the Field

Introduce Rumi's invitation:

• "Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I'll meet you there."
• This is not moral relativism—it is transcendence
• The field does not eliminate right and wrong; it holds them in something larger
• In the field, there is no "other"

Key distinction: Releasing judgment is not the same as abandoning discernment. The field allows you to see clearly without the distortion of righteous separation.

Step 3: What the Field Reveals

Explore what becomes visible beyond duality:

• The shared humanity beneath the positions
• The fears and longings driving both sides
• What everyone actually wants (often the same things)
• The false certainties that judgment required

Questions for the field:

• What do I see about the other when I am not defending my position?
• What do I see about myself when I am not building my case?
• What becomes possible in relationship when neither of us is prosecuting or defending?

Step 4: Meeting in the Field

What true meeting requires:

• Laying down the weapons of rightness
• Willingness to be changed by the encounter
• Seeing the other's face without the mask of your judgment
• Letting go of the story that made them enemy

The practice: "I'll meet you there" is an invitation to the other, but first it is a commitment from you. You must go to the field first. You cannot drag someone there.

Step 5: Living from the Field

How to carry the field into daily life:

• Judgments will still arise—notice them without becoming them
• Return to the field when you find yourself building cases
• Remember: the field is not a place; it is a quality of attention
• Peace does not require agreement; it requires meeting beyond positions

Constraints

Input: "My sister and I haven't spoken in two years after a terrible fight about how to handle our mother's care. She thinks I abandoned her with all the responsibility. I think she pushed me out and made unilateral decisions. We're both so sure we're right that we can't even be in the same room."

The field does not eliminate what happened. It holds it in something larger.

What the Field Reveals

If you could go to that field for just a moment—lay down your case, put away the evidence, stop being right—what might you see?

Perhaps: your sister is exhausted. Perhaps she did take on too much, and her resentment comes from real overwhelm. Perhaps her "unilateral decisions" were made in moments when she felt alone and scared.

Perhaps: she also sees a sister who wasn't there, and she doesn't know what was happening in your life, what made presence impossible, what walls she may have built without knowing.

Perhaps: you both wanted the same thing—to care for your mother well, to feel supported by family, to not do it alone. And somehow, in the terrible pressure of the situation, you became obstacles to each other instead of support.

This is what the field reveals: not who was right, but what everyone needed and couldn't find.

The Meeting

"I'll meet you there" is first a commitment you make alone. You cannot drag your sister to the field. You can only go there yourself and wait.

What would it mean to lay down your rightness? Not to say "I was wrong" if you don't believe it—that is false peace. But to say: "I am willing to meet you in a place where neither of us needs to be right. I want my sister back more than I want to win this case."

The meeting in the field is not about the past. It is about: can we see each other now? Can we feel what was beneath the accusations? Can we hold this pain together instead of wielding it against each other?

Your mother needed care. You needed support. She needed support. Something broke. Now: can you meet in the brokenness instead of arguing about who broke it?

Living from the Field

This is practice, not a single conversation. You will find yourself building cases again—that is human. The practice is noticing: "I am back in the courtroom. Can I return to the field?"

You may need to contact your sister. Or you may need to go to the field alone first, many times, until your heart is soft enough to reach out. There is no timeline.

And if she cannot meet you there? The field is still yours. You can release the weight of rightness even if she cannot. Your peace does not depend on her arrival. But the door remains open.

Two years is a long time. And also: you are still sisters. The love that made the conflict so painful is still love. It is still there. It is waiting in the field.

Out beyond the story of who abandoned whom, beyond the ledger of wrongs given and received, beyond the fortress of being right— there is a place where you are simply sisters. Two women who loved the same mother. Two hearts that once knew each other.

You do not have to solve the past to go there. You only have to lay down your weapons and walk toward the one you have been calling enemy.
