Overview
Foucauldian genealogy is a "history of the present"—it analyzes current arrangements by tracing how they came to exist. Unlike Nietzsche's focus on moral psychology, Foucault's genealogy emphasizes institutions, practices, and the interplay of power and knowledge. The goal is not to find origins but to show emergence from contingency.
Core Principle: "The present is not the inevitable outcome of history but the product of multiple struggles, accidents, and dispersed origins."
When to Use
- An institution or practice seems inevitable ("there's no alternative")
- Something is presented as natural, obvious, or timeless
- A concept appears to be a universal truth
- Someone asks "Why do we do it this way?"
- A reform assumes the basic framework is correct
- You need to show that arrangements could be otherwise

The Seven-Step Method
Step 1: Identify the Present Concern
Begin with something that seems obvious today. State what is taken for granted.
Questions:
- What appears natural or inevitable?
- What assumption is everyone accepting?
- What would be absurd to question?
Example: "We assume prisons are the obvious response to crime."
Step 2: Denaturalize
Establish that this was not always the case. There was a time before this "obviousness."
Questions:
- When did this begin?
- What existed before?
- What alternatives were possible?
Example: "Before the late 18th century, public torture, exile, and execution were the norm. Incarceration as primary punishment emerged suddenly."
Step 3: Trace Emergence (Entstehung)
Follow the struggles, accidents, and power relations that produced the present. Emergence is not rational development but conflict.
Questions:
- What power struggles produced this?
- What forces were in play?
- Who gained and who lost?
- What knowledge justified it?
Key insight: Do not seek intentional design. Trace the interplay of forces producing unintended results.
Step 4: Analyze Descent (Herkunft)
Look for multiple, diverse origins—the contradictory elements that fed into the present form.
Questions:
- What disparate elements combined?
- What was borrowed from other domains?
- What tensions are built in?
Example: "The prison borrowed from the monastery (cells, schedules), the workshop (labor), the hospital (case files), and the school (reform)."
Step 5: Expose the Power/Knowledge Nexus
Show how knowledge and power intertwine—how expertise legitimated and was produced by this arrangement.
Questions:
- What knowledges crystallized around this?
- Who became the experts?
- What new categories of person were created?
- How does knowledge function as power?
Step 6: Reveal What It Produces
Show that the institution does not merely respond to a problem but actively produces effects.
Questions:
- What does this arrangement produce?
- What subjects or categories does it create?
- How does it shape bodies and possibilities?
- What is rendered invisible?
Example: "The prison produces the 'delinquent' as a category, generates recidivism, and justifies expanded surveillance."
Step 7: Open the Present
If the present emerged from contingency, it is not inevitable. Other arrangements are possible.
Questions:
- What alternatives existed?
- What could change?
- What is unthinkable that could become thinkable?
Note: Foucault does not prescribe solutions. The goal is to show contingency.

Foucauldian Genealogy: Sexuality
Present Concern
We assume that sexuality is a deep truth about ourselves, that everyone has a sexuality, that it must be discovered and confessed. Sexual identity seems the core of who we are.
Denaturalization
The category "sexuality" did not exist before the 19th century. People engaged in sexual acts, but these did not define identity. The "homosexual" as a type of person was invented in 1870 (Westphal's article on "contrary sexual sensation"). Before this, there were acts, not identities.
Emergence
Sexuality as a domain of knowledge emerged from:
- Medicine: Classifying sexual pathologies
- Psychiatry: Making sexuality the key to mental health
- Demography: Studying population and birth rates
- Confession: The Christian practice of examining and speaking one's desires
The Victorians did not repress sexuality—they incited discourse about it. Sexuality became something that must be spoken, examined, managed.
Descent
Sexuality drew from:
- Religious confession: Speaking desire to an authority
- Medical examination: The body as object of expert knowledge
- Legal categorization: Acts that require intervention
- Demographic concern: Population management
Power/Knowledge Nexus
Around sexuality crystallized:
