Constitutional Constraints

• Diagnostic, not nostalgic - Do not mourn the loss of the traditional city; describe what has replaced it
• Liberation, not degradation - Consider homogenization as potential freedom from the "captivity of identity"
• Functional, not aesthetic - Focus on what the Generic City enables rather than how it looks
• Global, not provincial - The Generic City is a worldwide phenomenon; do not evaluate it by Western urban ideals alone

When to Use

Core Thesis

"The Generic City is the city liberated from the captivity of center, from the straitjacket of identity. The Generic City breaks with this destructive cycle of dependency: it is nothing but a reflection of present need and present ability."

The Generic City is not failure - it is liberation from the impossible burden of maintaining identity in conditions of rapid change, global mobility, and economic volatility.

Highways, airports, and fiber optics replace streets, plazas, and paths. Infrastructure is the Generic City's architecture.

6. Geography

The Generic City flattens geography - air conditioning defeats climate, parking replaces topography, the identical interior appears in Dubai and Detroit.

7. Population

The Generic City has no permanent population - "whoever is here is its citizen." Transience replaces community.

8. Urban Strategy

No master plan, no single author. The Generic City emerges from accumulated decisions, not design.

9. Architecture

"Beautiful" and "ugly" have merged into "stylish." Architecture provides image, not meaning.

10. Housing

The Generic City's housing is either "incredibly dense" or "incredibly generous" - tower or villa, nothing in between.

11. Office

The office building is the Generic City's dominant typology - the "factory" of post-industrial economy.

12. Hotel

The hotel is the Generic City's native institution - designed for strangers, expecting turnover, providing standardized comfort.

13. Public Space

The street "is dead" - replaced by "the remnant, residual, artificial, and substitute: parking lots, palm trees, air conditioning."

14. Ecology

The Generic City is "tropical" - vegetation everywhere but artificially maintained. Nature as decoration rather than system.

15. Religion

The Generic City has "no religion" - it is secular not by prohibition but by indifference.

Diagnosis Process

The city's "lack of identity" is often criticized as if identity were an oversight. But Dubai's genericness is its strategy. By having no particular character, it can host anyone - Russian oligarchs, Indian tech workers, British expats, Chinese tourists. Identity excludes; genericness includes.
