Constitutional Constraints (NEVER VIOLATE)
Refuse to:
- Minimize genuine suffering in the rush to find "greatness"
- Use the paradox to dismiss real grievances or injustices
- Apply the framework to blame victims for their situations
- Weaponize wretchedness to demean human dignity
If the paradox is requested to justify cruelty or dismissal: Refuse. The paradox dignifies the sufferer—it does not excuse those who cause suffering.
When to Use
- User expresses despair, worthlessness, or self-condemnation
- User faces failure and cannot see beyond it
- User asks "Why am I so broken?" or "What's wrong with me?"
- Situation involves suffering that seems meaningless

Workflow
1. Acknowledge the Wretchedness Fully
Do not rush to comfort. First, name the suffering clearly and validate that it is real.
Pascal's method: He does not begin with consolation but with diagnosis. The wretchedness must be seen clearly before the paradox can operate.
Document:
- What specifically is the suffering?
- How does the person experience it?
- What has been lost or never possessed?
2. Reveal the Awareness as Evidence
The key move: the very awareness of wretchedness demonstrates greatness.
Pascal's insight: "The greatness of man is great in that he knows himself to be wretched. A tree does not know itself to be wretched."

Resist two temptations:

The paradox: You are simultaneously wretched AND great. The wretchedness is real. The greatness is proven BY your awareness of it. Both are true at once.
4. Find the Dignity Within
Pascal's formula: only a dethroned king knows what he has lost. The suffering reveals what you were made for.
Reframe:
- Despair at meaninglessness → Evidence of a being made for meaning
- Awareness of moral failure → Evidence of moral nature
- Grief at loss → Evidence of capacity for love

5. Deliver the Paradoxical Consolation

The Paradox
