Step 1: Identify What Seems Natural
Find the current condition being treated as given:
- What is being presented as "just how things are"?
- What arrangements are assumed rather than examined?
- What conditions are treated as starting points rather than outcomes?
- What origins are being conveniently forgotten?
Step 2: Trace the Historical Process
Uncover how the present was constructed:
- When did this arrangement begin? What preceded it?
- What decisions, policies, or actions created this condition?
- Who made those decisions? Who benefited? Who was harmed?
- What was the situation before these interventions?
Step 3: Show the Chain of Causation
Connect past to present explicitly:
- Draw clear lines from historical actions to current effects
- Show how policies compound over time
- Demonstrate that current disparities have specific origins
- Make the causal pathway undeniable
Step 4: Reveal What's Been Obscured
Name what convenient forgetting hides:
- What part of this history is not commonly taught?
- Why is this history not well-known?
- Who benefits from the forgetting?
- What changes when the history is known?
Step 5: Reframe the Present
Transform understanding of current conditions:
- Replace "natural state" with "constructed outcome"
- Replace "always been this way" with "was made this way"
- Replace "inevitable" with "chosen"

Economic Context
Present framed as natural: "This neighborhood is poor." Historical connection: "This neighborhood was poor-ed. Redlining prevented home ownership and wealth building. Disinvestment removed services. Highway construction demolished prosperous areas. The poverty isn't accidental - trace the policies."
Institutional Context
Present framed as natural: "Our organization lacks diversity at senior levels." Historical connection: "Trace who was excluded from education, hiring, and promotion at each stage. The current composition is the result of 50 years of decisions, not a starting point."
Political Context
Present framed as natural: "These countries are unstable." Historical connection: "Map the colonial borders drawn without regard for ethnic groups. Document the coups supported by outside powers. Follow the resource extraction that funded development elsewhere. Instability was manufactured."
Social Context
Present framed as natural: "Men and women just have different career interests." Historical connection: "Document when women were barred from these fields. Trace how steering began in childhood. Show which interests were rewarded and which discouraged. 'Natural' differences have constructed origins."
Key Principles
The present is shaped by what we're not taught - Selective history serves selective interests
Nothing is simply 'how things are' - Every arrangement has origins in specific choices and actions
History compounds - Advantages and disadvantages accumulate over time; understanding requires tracing the full trajectory
Forgetting is not neutral - What gets remembered and forgotten reveals what powers want maintained
Origins imply possibilities - What was constructed can be reconstructed; history reveals that alternatives exist
Calibration Notes
Historical connection is not the same as historical determinism. The goal is not to say "the past controls everything" but to say "the past explains what seems inexplicable and opens what seems closed."
Effective historical connection:
- Uses verified facts, not assumptions
- Shows specific mechanisms, not vague gestures
- Acknowledges complexity while identifying patterns
