Step 1: Name the Hollowing

Acknowledge the experience of emptiness:

Step 3: What the Hollowing Creates

Explore the capacities born from emptiness:

• What capacity for listening now exists where talking used to fill space?
• What depth is available where surface used to be?
• What compassion has room to grow where self-concern was hollowed out?
• What space for others exists where your own fullness used to occupy?

The reed's gift: The hollowing is not punishment. It is preparation. You are being made into an instrument.

Step 4: The Breath That Waits

Identify what might flow through now:

• What "music" might be played through you that required this hollowing?
• What work in the world needs someone who has been emptied out like this?
• What purpose might require exactly the spaces that have been carved?
• What breath is waiting to use you as its instrument?

Question: If you were being prepared to carry something specific, what might it be?

Step 5: Becoming the Instrument

What it means to be played rather than play:

• The reed does not make its own music—it allows itself to be breathed through
• Your task is not to fill the emptiness but to let it be used
• Surrender is not defeat; it is becoming available
• The music that comes through you will be yours AND not-yours

The Hollowing

Eighteen years. A marriage, a family, an identity built around being wife and mother. And now: empty rooms, empty role, empty definition of self. The structure that held your days together has dissolved. What remains is you, but a "you" you do not recognize—because you always saw yourself in relation to them, and now the mirror is gone.

This is not mild discomfort. This is existential hollowing. Everything you filled yourself with, everything you organized your life around—carved away. The void is real. It is vast. It is disorienting to stand in the middle of your life with no walls, no familiar furniture, no clear path from morning to night.

The Reed's Song

Rumi opens his greatest work with the cry of the reed:

The reed was torn from everything it knew. Its reed bed. Its family of reeds. Its roots. It was cut, hollowed out, and left to dry. If the reed could think, it would despair: "I have lost everything. I am empty. There is nothing left."

But the reed does not know, in its grieving, what it has been prepared for. The hollowing is what allows the breath to pass through. The very emptiness that feels like devastation is what makes music possible.

A solid reed cannot sing. Only the one that has been cut, hollowed, dried, and lifted to the lips of the divine player.

What the Hollowing Creates

Consider what now exists in you that did not exist when you were full:

Space to hear. For eighteen years, your attention was occupied—the endless needs of family, the maintenance of marriage, the thousand daily decisions. Now there is silence. In that silence, what might you finally hear? What have you been unable to listen to because there was no room?

Depth where surface was. The roles gave you surface identity: wife, mother, homemaker. Comfortable, clear, defended. Now the surface is stripped. What is underneath? Who are you without the roles? This question is terrifying because it is also the most important question. You get to find out now. You could not find out before.

Capacity to hold others. Those who have been hollowed can hold others in their emptiness. Those who have lost everything can sit with others who are losing. This is not abstract—it is a capacity being forged in you right now. You will be able to meet suffering that the untouched cannot meet.

The Breath That Waits

I cannot tell you what music will come through you. But I can ask you to consider: what has been waiting?

For eighteen years, you subordinated your desires, your curiosities, your unlived lives. There were things you wanted to explore, become, create—and there was no room, no time, no permission.

Now there is room. Now there is time. The permission you were waiting for is the emptiness itself—it is saying: finally, there is space for something new.

At fifty-two, you have decades ahead. What might pour through the hollow reed you have become? What work? What love? What becoming you could not have imagined from inside the life that has ended?

The breath that waits might be: work you have not yet discovered, people you have not yet met, a version of yourself you could not have become while you were full of the old life. It is waiting for you to stop trying to fill the emptiness with what was there before—and instead, let something new breathe through.

Becoming the Instrument

The hardest part: you do not get to control the music. The reed does not choose its song. It makes itself available.

Your task right now is not to fill the emptiness or to know what comes next. Your task is to become available. To grieve what was lost—fully, without rushing. And to stay open to what wants to breathe through you now.

This is surrender, but not defeat. It is becoming an instrument. The most beautiful music comes through those who have been hollowed enough to carry something larger than themselves.

You were wife and mother. Those were beautiful songs. But the musician has paused, lifted a different reed, and is about to breathe a new song through you. You do not yet know what it will be. Neither did the reed.

Trust the breath. Trust the player. Let yourself be played.

You are the reed torn from the bed— but the bed was not your home. Your home is the song that comes after, the one that requires your hollowing.

Do not try to fill yourself with the old life. Do not stuff the emptiness with busyness and distraction.

Stay hollow. Let the wind move through. Something is learning to breathe you.

The music that comes will be worth everything that was taken. It always is.
