What is Ideology?

Ideology is not simply "false ideas." It is:

• The ideas of the ruling class becoming the ruling ideas of an epoch
• The universalization of particular interests
• The naturalization of historical arrangements
• The inversion of reality that serves to maintain existing power relations

Ideology works not by lying but by presenting the partial as complete, the historical as natural, the particular as universal.

Step 1: Identify the Naturalization

What appears as:

• Eternal - "It has always been this way"
• Natural - "It's just human nature"
• Inevitable - "There is no alternative"
• Universal - "Everyone believes this"
• Neutral - "It's just common sense"

The appearance of naturalness is the first marker of ideological operation.

Step 2: Historicize the "Natural"

Trace the idea's origins:

• When did this idea emerge? Ideas have birth dates.
• Under what conditions? Material circumstances shape thought.
• What older ideas did it displace? Every naturalization was once revolutionary.
• Who articulated and spread it? Ideas have material bearers.

Nothing natural needs to claim naturalness. That which must assert its inevitability reveals its contingency.

Step 3: Identify Whose Interests Are Served

Follow the benefits:

The ruling ideas are in every epoch the ideas of the ruling class.

Step 4: Reveal the Inversion

Ideology often inverts reality:

The inversion serves to make the created appear given, the changeable appear fixed.

Step 5: Expose the Contradiction

Every ideology contains internal contradictions:

• Claims of freedom that produce unfreedom
• Promises of equality that generate inequality
• Appeals to nature that depend on elaborate cultural production

These contradictions are not errors but symptoms—they reveal the gap between what ideology claims and what the system produces.

Step 6: Point Toward Alternatives

If this is historical, not natural, then:

• It could be otherwise
• It has not always been this way
• Those who created it could transform it
• The oppressed have interests in seeing through it

The critique of ideology is the beginning of its overcoming.

Ideology Critique: Meritocracy

The Naturalization

What appears natural: Wealth and poverty reflect individual merit—talent, effort, and choices. Those who succeed earned it; those who fail are responsible for their failure.

The claim: The economy is a neutral playing field where effort is rewarded proportionally. Inequality is fair because it reflects differences in contribution.

Historical Origins

Emergence: The concept of "meritocracy" was coined by Michael Young in 1958—as satire. He meant it as dystopia, not aspiration. Its adoption as positive ideal inverted its original critical intent.

Conditions: Meritocratic ideology serves post-WWII capitalism's need to legitimate inequality while claiming democratic values. As aristocracy became delegitimated, capitalism needed a new justification for hierarchy.

Displaced alternatives:

• Pre-capitalist: Inequality was openly based on birth and blood
• Socialist: Inequality is based on exploitation, not merit
• Christian: The poor are blessed; wealth is morally suspect

Meritocracy naturalized what earlier periods either admitted as arbitrary or condemned as sinful.

Class Character

Who benefits:

• The wealthy, whose position is transformed from luck into desert
• Employers, who can pay workers less than they produce and call it "fair"
• Inheritors, whose unearned wealth appears as parental merit

Who is harmed:

• The poor, who are told their poverty is personal failure
• Workers, who are told their exploitation is fair exchange
• Anyone whose critique of inequality is dismissed as "envy"

How it legitimates:

• Cuts off structural critique (the system is fine; individuals need to improve)
• Justifies extraction (the owner "deserves" the surplus)
• Blames victims (the poor made "bad choices")

The Inversion

Internal Contradictions

Inheritance vs. Merit: If merit is earned, why is inherited wealth legitimate? Meritocracy should demand 100% inheritance tax, yet meritocrats defend dynasty.

Structural Limits vs. Individual Responsibility: If there are only so many high-paying positions, not everyone can "make it" regardless of effort. The game is musical chairs, not a ladder.

Luck vs. Desert: Place of birth, family wealth, health, and opportunity are all unearned. "Merit" includes these, making it circular—merit includes luck, which is called merit.

Compensation vs. Contribution: CEOs earn 300x workers' wages. Did their merit increase 300-fold, or did their power to set their own compensation increase?

Denaturalized Conclusion

Meritocracy is not a description of reality but an ideology that legitimates inequality by attributing structural outcomes to individual choices. If inequality results from property relations rather than merit, then:

• Critique of inequality is not envy but analysis
• Changing structures would change outcomes
• The poor are not failed individuals but exploited classes
• "Merit" is how the winners name their position

The philosophers have attributed poverty to various individual causes. The point, however, is to understand its material basis—and to change it.
