Purpose

Integrate imaginative exploration with existing knowledge to generate creative breakthroughs and novel perspectives. Break through mental blocks by allowing ideas to combine freely before formal analysis constrains them.

When to Use

• You're stuck and need a creative breakthrough
• Conventional approaches have been exhausted
• You need to see a problem from entirely new angles
• You want to generate novel ideas, not optimize existing ones
• You're facing a challenge that seems to require something fundamentally new

Inputs

The Five-Step Process

Step 1: Inventory Your Knowledge

Before imagination can recombine, you need to know what you have.

Map the territory:

• What do you know about this domain?
• What principles govern it?
• What constraints are real?
• What has been tried before?
• What adjacent domains might be relevant?

Don't censor or evaluate yet—just catalog. Einstein knew physics, philosophy, and mathematics. His breakthroughs came from having multiple knowledge domains to combine.

Step 2: Identify the Block

Where exactly are you stuck?

Common blocks:

• Assumption blindness: Can't see alternatives because current frame seems obviously correct
• Expert trap: Know so much about how it's done that you can't imagine other ways
• Solution fixation: Anchored on one approach, unable to let go
• Constraint confusion: Treating perceived constraints as real ones
• Category imprisonment: Seeing only the uses something "is for"

Name your block. Naming it loosens its grip.

Step 3: Enter Combinatory Play

Now, deliberately shift from analytical to playful mode.

Techniques for combinatory play:

Random combination: Pick two unrelated elements from your knowledge inventory. How might they connect?

• What if you applied music principles to engineering?
• What if cooking techniques informed your software design?
• What if ancient philosophy addressed your modern problem?

Role shifting: Think as someone from a completely different field would.

• How would a biologist see this problem?
• What would an artist do?
• How would a child approach this?

Constraint inversion: Instead of working within constraints, imagine they don't exist.

• If resources were unlimited, what would you do?
• If time didn't matter?
• If current technology were magic?

Historical displacement: How would this problem be solved in a different era?

• How would a medieval craftsman approach it?
• What about someone 100 years in the future?

Analogy hunting: What else is like this situation?

• What seems completely different but might have structural similarities?
• Nature has solved billions of problems—what natural analog exists?

Step 4: Harvest Novel Perspectives

From combinatory play, something unexpected emerges. Capture it.

Questions to crystallize insights:

• What surprised me in this exploration?
• What connection did I not see before?
• What assumption did I discover I was making?
• What if I took this apparently absurd idea seriously?

The goal is not yet to have a solution, but to have perspectives you didn't have before. Einstein imagined riding a light beam at age 16. The insight percolated for years before becoming special relativity.

Step 5: Bridge Back to Reality

Now, apply analytical thinking to your imaginative harvest.

For each novel perspective:

• What kernel of real insight does it contain?
• How might it work in practical terms?
• What would need to be true for this to be viable?
• What's the smallest experiment that could test it?

The creative breakthrough happens in the interplay between imagination (unconstrained) and knowledge (disciplined). Neither alone produces breakthroughs—the magic is in the integration.

The Imagination-Knowledge Relationship

Einstein said imagination is more important than knowledge. But he didn't mean we should abandon knowledge—he meant:

Knowledge alone is limited:

• Tells you what IS, not what COULD BE
• Can trap you in current paradigms
• Creates expert blindness
• Optimizes within existing frames

Imagination alone is ungrounded:

• Generates ideas that can't work
• Lacks the material for recombination
• Produces fantasy, not innovation
• Can't evaluate feasibility

Together they generate breakthroughs:

• Imagination proposes; knowledge disposes
• Knowledge provides building blocks; imagination rearranges them
• Constraints from knowledge make imagination productive
• Freedom from imagination makes knowledge generative

Workflow

Step 1: Gather and Review Inputs

Collect all relevant information:

• Review the provided data and context
• Identify key parameters and constraints
• Clarify any ambiguities or missing information
• Establish success criteria

Perform systematic analysis:

• Identify patterns and relationships
• Evaluate against established frameworks
• Consider multiple perspectives
• Document key findings

Create actionable outputs:

• Synthesize insights from analysis

• Ensure recommendations are specific and measurable

• Constraints: Users have limited time/attention; must learn enough to succeed; can't change core product

• What's been tried: Tooltips, tutorials, progress indicators, simplified first run

Block Identification: You're likely trapped in the assumption that onboarding means teaching. Every optimization has been about teaching better. But what if teaching isn't the answer?

Combinatory Play:

Random combination (Theme parks + Onboarding): Theme parks don't teach you how to have fun—they create experiences where fun happens naturally. What if onboarding wasn't about teaching the software but about creating an experience where success happens naturally?

Role shifting (Game designer): Games don't explain their controls in tutorials—they create situations where you discover the controls work. Level 1 is designed so you can only succeed by doing what you need to learn. What if the first task in your software was designed so the user can only complete it by accidentally learning the key feature?

Constraint inversion: If users had infinite time and attention, you'd just let them explore and discover. What if, instead of fighting limited attention, you designed for it? What's the smallest possible success that still delivers value?

Analogy (Learning to swim): You can't learn to swim on land. The best swimming instruction happens in water. Maybe users can't learn your software by watching your software—they can only learn it by doing the thing they came to do.

Fresh Perspectives:

1. Onboarding isn't teaching—it's experience design
2. Users don't want to learn your software; they want to accomplish something
3. The best "tutorial" is a carefully designed first real task
4. Drop-off might not be a learning problem but a motivation problem

Practical Bridges:

• Instead of a tutorial, identify the smallest real task that delivers real value
• Design that task so completing it requires learning the key interaction
• Make the first experience a real accomplishment, not a practice run
• Measure "first valuable action" instead of "tutorial completion"
